Fed Biz fells track record in San Diego romp

Last updated: 7/26/14 10:07 PM

Kaleem Shah Inc. et al's Fed Biz became the second straight son of Giant's

Causeway to set a track record at

Del Mar on Saturday when

wiring the Grade 2, $201,000

San

Diego by 5 1/4 lengths in a final time 1:41.00 for 1 1/16 miles over the

Polytrack. One race previously, Big Cazanova established a new record of 1:34.74

for a mile in an optional claimer.

Both runners accomplished their records in the same fashion -- by taking the

lead and never looking back. Jockey Martin Garcia gunned Fed Biz out of his far

outside post when the gates opened, and the five-year-old easily grabbed the

lead while angling over to the rail. Handsome Mike took up a stalking spot off

his flank as Fed Biz proceeded down the backstretch in splits of :23 3/5, :47

1/5 and 1:10 4/5.

Garcia gave Fed Biz more rein rounding the turn as Handsome Mike and

Footbridge ranged up to his outside, and the bay responded. Fed Biz turned back

all rivals in the lane to set a second track record at Del Mar following last

year's new time of 1:21.12 for seven furlongs on the Polytrack in the Pat

O'Brien.

Footbridge got the best of You Know I Know on the wire by a length. It was

another half-length back to 2-1 favorite Frac Daddy, who had that same margin to

spare on Handsome Mike to complete the superfecta. Honduran, Soi Phet,

Imperative and Battier finished the order under the line following the scratch

of Summer Hit.

Morning-line favorite Dance With Fate suffered fatal injuries in a freak

accident during training hours Thursday at Del Mar while preparing for this

race.

Fed Biz paid $8 for the win as the 3-1 second choice in the field in his

first start since finishing sixth in last November's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

The Kentucky-bred improved his career record to 6-1-3 from 16 career starts and

has racked up $660,496 in lifetime earnings thanks to prior victories in the San

Fernando, El Cajon and aforementioned Pat O'Brien. He's is also responsible for

a quartet of black-type placings, including the Frank E. Kilroe Mile, Indiana

Derby and Strub.

Bred by Colts Neck Stables LLC, Fed Biz was purchased for $950,000 as a

Keeneland September yearling by Shah, who later took on partners for the

ownership. Fed Biz is out of the stakes-winning Wild Again mare Spunoutacontrol,

making him a half-brother to stakes victress Spun Silk as well as the dam of

last month's NYSS Spectacular Bid winner Mark My Way.

Hailing from a star-studded female line, Fed Biz counts as his second dam the

winning Mr. Prospector mare Yarn. She is best known for producing Grade 1 victor

and noted sire Tale of the Cat; English and Irish highweight Minardi; and Myth,

the dam of U.S. and European champion Johannesburg, who has gone on to become a

top sire.

Yarn is a full sister to Grade 1 diva Preach, the dam of leading sire Pulpit.

Fed Biz's third dam is the Grade 3-winning Honest Pleasure mare Narrate, and his

fifth dam, Monarchy, is a full sister to Hall of Famer Round Table.
