Field closes as 6-1 favorite in second Derby
Future
The "all other three-year-olds" listing in Pool 2 of the
Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed as the 6-1 favorite on Sunday. Not far back,
though, were three individual interests listed at 8-1 -- CIRCULAR QUAY (Thunder
Gulch), NOBIZ LIKE SHOBIZ (Albert the Great) and STREET SENSE (Street Cry
[Ire]).
Circular Quay finally got a clean trip and used it to good
advantage on Saturday when taking the Louisiana Derby (G2) by 2 1/4 lengths at
Fair Grounds. A Grade 1 winner as a juvenile, the Todd Pletcher-trained chestnut
ended his two-year-old campaign with a second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile
(G1). He returned three months later to be a troubled fifth in the Risen Star S.
(G3) but proved that to be an aberration with his Derby score. Circular Quay
closed at 12-1 in Pool 1 of the Future Wager.
Nobiz Like Shobiz led all individual interests of Pool 1 at 8-1
and was bet down to that same number for this one. The bay colt captured the
Holy Bull S. (G3) going a mile in his sophomore bow two back, and just missed to
be a half-length third in the March 3 Fountain of Youth S. (G2). The winner of
the Fountain of Youth, SCAT DADDY (Johannesburg), saw his odds drop dramatically
to 16-1 after closing at 44-1 in the first Future Wager.
Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and champion Street Sense is
scheduled to make his three-year-old debut on Saturday in the Tampa Bay Derby
(G3), and his odds fell from 10-1 in Pool 1 to 8-1 here in advance of that
start. The Carl Nafzger trainee earned his only stakes win in the biggest race
of his juvenile season.
Total wagering on Pool 2 reached $379,613, a decrease of 18.2
percent over last year's Pool 2 when $464,236 was wagered. The third and final
pool will be held April 12-15.
