Friday at Royal Ascot taking shape
Khalid Abdullah's MODERN LOOK (Zamindar) on Saturday headed a field of 15
fillies remaining in Friday's Coronation S. (Eng-G1). Fourth in the Poule d'Essai
des Pouliches (Fr-G1) at Longchamp on May 11 before winning the Prix de Sandringham
(Fr-G1) at
Chantilly on June 1, the David Smaga-trained sophomore was reported firmly on
course for her British bow by the owner/breeder's racing manager Teddy
Grimthorpe.
"She is the top-rated horse in the race and is in very good nick,"
Grimthorpe said. "She is very straightforward and has done very well since
Chantilly, where she won as comfortably as she should have done, but even
without Natagora (Divine Light) and Zarkava (Zamindar), this is a high-class race."
Heading the
home opposition is the Cheveley Park Stud-owned pair of SPACIOUS (Nayef)
and INFALLIBLE (Pivotal), second and fourth, respectively, in the One Thousand
Guineas (Eng-G1) at Newmarket on May 4, while the third-placed in that classic, SAOIRSE
ABU (Mr. Greeley), is also featured in the list. She may be joined by LUSH
LASHES (Galileo [Ire]), also from the Jim Bolger stable, while the Irish
contingent is strengthened by three of the first four home in the Irish One
Thousand Guineas (Ire-G1) in MAD ABOUT YOU (Indian Ridge), CARRIBEAN SUNSET (Danehill Dancer) and TUSCAN
EVENING (Oasis Dream [GB]).
Only
Mohammed Al Shafar's Premio Regina Elena (Ity-G3) winner LOVE OF DUBAI (More than Ready) was supplemented at yesterday's stage and she will
represent the Clive Brittain barn.
In the King Edward VII S. (Eng-G2) on the undercard, Anthony Oppenheimer's BRONZE
CANNON (Lemon Drop Kid) headed a field of 19 after Alan Spence's Chester Vase
(Eng-G3) runner-up ALL THE ACES (Spartacus) and Ballymacoll Stud's impressive
Epsom handicap scorer CONDUIT (Dalakhani) were supplemented at a
cost of £20,000 by trainers Michael Jarvis and Sir Michael Stoute, respectively.
Bronze Cannon beat subsequent Epsom Derby (Eng-G1) fourth Doctor Fremantle (Sadler's
Wells) in a
Newmarket handicap on April 17 before following up at the same track and level
on May
25.
"Everything's fine and he'll go to Ascot," the owner/ breeder's racing
advisor
Hugo Lascelles told PA Sport. "I should think the ground will be fine for him at
Ascot, as long as it's not too slow -- if it was soft he wouldn't run."
Aidan
O'Brien has five entries, including Gallinule S. (Ire-G3) scorer Hebridean (Bach
[Ire]), while Godolphin have a sole contender in Lingfield Derby Trial (Eng-G3) third
CAMPANOLOGIST (Kingmambo).
