Full field likely in Lane's End

Last updated: 3/21/07 8:15 AM

Lecomte (G3) hero HARD SPUN (Danzig) is the likely favorite in Saturday's

$500,000 Lane's End S. (G2) at Turfway Park, but the once-beaten colt isn't

scaring off the opposition. A trio of sophomores -- FOREFATHERS (Gone West),

HIGHEST DEGREE (Menifee) and JOE GOT EVEN (Stephen Got Even) -- have been added

to consideration, and an overflow is expected when entries are taken Wednesday

morning.

Only 12 will be allowed to enter the 1 1/8-mile Lane's End. Fox Hill Farm's

Hard Spun won his first four starts by a combined 28 lengths, opening this year

with a 6 1/2-length win in the Lecomte at Fair Grounds, but his reputation took

a hit following a fourth in the Southwest S. at Oaklawn Park last out. The Larry

Jones charge has worked well recently over the Polytrack at Turfway, recording a

pair of bullet moves, and regular rider Mario Pino will aboard on Saturday.

"I imagine he will be very close, if not on the (early) lead," Fox Hill

Farm owner Rick Porter said. "If there is (other) speed in the race, I think he will

relax and stalk and be where we'd like him to be."

SPORTS TOWN (Belong to Me), who exits a third in the February 10 Whirlaway S.

at Aqueduct, will start in the Lane's End for trainer John Terranova.

"He got sick after the Whirlaway, so we missed the Gotham S. (G3) and had to

go to Plan B," assistant trainer Tonya Terranova said. "We've never run a horse on

Polytrack, but we've heard nothing but good things about it. He doesn't seem to

care about the track he's on."

Other Lane's End probables include CATMAN RUNNING (Tactical Cat), who posted

his third straight victory when capturing the John Battaglia Memorial S. last

out; TWILIGHT METEOR (Smart Strike) and SEDGEFIELD (Smart Strike), the

respective one-two finishers in the Tropical Park Derby (G3); FOR YOU REPPO (El

Corredor), who exits a good second in a Gulfstream allowance; the D. Wayne

Lukas-trained and Grade 3-placed STARBASE (Tale of the Cat); and recent

Gulfstream allowance scorer BULLARA (Holy Bull), who along with Twilight Meteor

hails from the powerful Todd Pletcher stable.
