Claiborne Farm's homebred HAKA (Dynaformer) continued her streak of strong

efforts over synthetic surfaces when notching her first career stakes win in

Friday's $98,000

Doubledogdare S. (G3) at Keeneland. Tracking in third for more than a

half-mile, the four-year-old filly made a three-wide bid for the lead rounding

the far turn under Garrett Gomez and drew off with a furlong remaining to post

the win by a length in a time of 1:44 3/5 over the Polytrack. The 7-2 second

choice returned $9.40, $4 and $2.60.

Funny Moon (Malibu Moon), last year's Coaching Club American Oaks (G1)

winner, showed unexpected speed traded leads with No Use Denying (Maria's Mon)

through splits of :24 and :47 4/5. Funny Moon pulled away by a length through

six panels in 1:12 4/5, but ultimately proved no match for Haka. Funny Moon held

off the 4-5 favorite Striking Dancer (Smart Strike) for the place, returning

$5.20 and $2.80 at 9-2. Striking Dancer paid the mandatory minimum of $2.10. The

exacta was worth $42 and the 1-2-3 trifecta paid $69.80.

Lady's Laughter (Distorted Humor) finished fourth, more than eight lengths

behind Striking Dancer, while No Use Denying crossed the wire last after coming

to a near-complete stop through the stretch. Starship Angel (Running Stag) and

Unforgotten (Northern Afleet) were both scratched in favor of the Saturday's

Sixty Sails H. (G3) and Sugar Maple S., respectively.

Haka is trained by Christophe Clement, who also saddled Funny Moon in the

Doubledogdare. Haka broke her maiden in her third career start at Hollywood

Park, then ran second in the 2009 Santa Ysabel S. (G3) and Las Virgenes S. (G1),

the latter to the recently retired champion Stardom Bound. Sidelined for more

than seven months following that effort, Haka placed in three of her next four

starts on turf before returning to the synthetic at Santa Anita on February 28,

when she captured an entry-level allowance by a neck going 1 1/16 miles. Never

worse than second in five career starts on the synthetic, the Doubledogdare

victory pushed her overall record to 11-3-4-3, $226,167.

Produced from the stakes-placed Juke (Mr. Prospector), the Kentucky-bred Haka

is a half-sister to a yearling colt by Dynaformer. Juke is a half-sister to

multiple Grade 2 winner American Chance (Cure the Blues) and the Grade 3-placed

stakes winner Ophidian (Ogygian). Others notables in this family are Grade 1

winners Chief Honcho (Chief's Crown), Versailles Treaty (Danzig) and General

Assembly (Secretariat), as well as Exclusive Native (Raise a Native), the sire

of Kentucky Derby (G1) winners Affirmed and Genuine Risk.
