Hard-Lucky Mare Produces 'Lucky' Filly for First-Time Owners
)
Kurtis Coady and fiancée Chelsey Moysey have both spent their entire lives in the Thoroughbred racing industry, but on Friday, July 14, they will each enjoy a race for the first time as owners when Love and Mischief starts in the 4th race at Belterra Park (click for FREE Brisnet.com Ultimate Past Performances).
Coady and his brothers operate leading track photography company Coady Photography, and Moysey is the long-time assistant to trainer Buff Bradley, who will saddle the 2-year-old filly by Duke of Mischief, which he co-owns with the couple.
The aptly named filly, who will be making her debut about a month before Coady and Moysey are to wed, has been a labor of love for her owners, trainer, and breeder Dawn Coffman. She is out of Timeless Love, who was Bradley’s first stakes winner and owned by his late father, Fred. She quickly became a barn favorite with her hard-knocking style that produced 5 wins, 4 seconds, and 3 thirds from 28 starts with stakes wins in the 2003 Ohio Valley Handicap and 2001 Gowell Stakes.
After Timeless Love retired from racing Fred Bradley added her to his broodmare band and her first four foals were all winners. Unfortunately, she did not produce a foal between 2010 and 2014. Wanting her to have a good home after Fred became ill, the Bradleys gave the mare to Moysey’s mom, Dawn Coffman, who brought her to her farm in Florida and was able to get her pregnant on the first try with a mating to first year stallion Duke of Mischief. That foal is Love and Mischief.
“We’re all really excited,” Moysey said. “The filly is doing well. (Jockey) John McKee has come to work her a few times at Churchill and he likes her a lot and will ride her Friday. My mom was very hands with her from the time she was born and to have her make the races is very special.”
Love and Mischief, who drew post five, will be making her debut in a 5 ½ furlong maiden special weight against a field of 10. Post time is 2:53 p.m. ET.
