Heatseeker shocks in Native Diver

Last updated: 12/8/07 9:11 PM

William De Burgh's HEATSEEKER (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) bid four wide into the

stretch and powered clear to a 1 1/4-length upset in the $111,800

Native Diver

H. (G3) over the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park on Saturday. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and ridden by Michael Baze, the improving four-year-old was in

midpack early before putting in his winning rush, reaching the wire in a

track-record 1:47 1/5 for the 1 1/8 miles. The 30-1 outsider paid $63.40, $20.60

and $10.60, while keying the $1 exotics: $231.30 exacta, $2,687.40 trifecta and

$8,735.60 superfecta (9-8-5-1).

Racketeer (Awesome Again) was last at the first call but closed willingly in

the final quarter-mile to garner place honors at nearly 9-1. The runner-up gave

back $9.40 and $5.40 while three lengths clear of Isipingo (Horse Chestnut [SAf]), who

was worth $6.20 at 8-1. Ravel (Fusaichi Pegasus), the 6-5 favorite, was in

striking position turning for home but never threatened in capping the

superfecta. Completing the order of finish were Arson Squad (Brahms), Bold Chieftain (Chief Seattle), Hello Sunday

(Fr) (Poliglote [GB]), Wanna Runner (El Corredor), Buzzards Bay (Marco Bay) and

pacesetter Masterpiece (Arg) (Southern Halo), who set splits of :23 2/5, :46 4/5

and 1:10 2/5 before fading.

Heatseeker captured his first two starts as a juvenile in 2005 and followed

up with a

third-place effort in the National S. (Ire-G1). The chestnut made just one

start at three and returned this year, with his best result a runner-up

performance in the Windy Sands H. three prior. The colt sports a 12-5-3-1 career

mark with $263,172 in earnings.

The winner was bred in Ireland by Richard F. Barnes and produced from Rusty

Back (Defensive Play).
