Henny Hughes sires first winner in Dalamar

Last updated: 7/21/10 4:38 PM

HENNY HUGHES (Hennessy) was represented by his first winning offspring on

Wednesday when Dalamar captured the 3RD race at Delaware Park. Trained by Bret

Calhoun and ridden in the five-furlong test by Justin Shepherd, the Gulf Coast

Farms homebred went wire-to-wire to score by two lengths on the line. The

chestnut juvenile stopped the clock in :59 1/5 while making just his second

lifetime start.

Henny Hughes opened his career with three straight dominating victories,

starting with a six-length maiden win in June 2005 at Monmouth Park. Based on

that stellar run, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin sent his charge into the Tremont S.

at Belmont Park just two weeks later and Henny Hughes responded with a 15-length

domination. After another 24 days, the then juvenile colt followed up at

Saratoga with a 3 3/4-length score while making his graded debut in the Saratoga

Special S. (G2).

Henny Hughes suffered his first career loss when second in the Hopeful S.

(G1) and rounded out his two-year-old campaign by filling that same spot in the

Champagne S. (G1) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). He didn't begin his sophomore

season until July and once again used Monmouth Park as the launching pad when

posting a 10-length score in the Jersey Shore S. (G3). Front-running victories

in the King's Bishop S. (G1) and Vosburgh S. (G1) followed, but repeated bumping

and a lack of running room resulted in a last-of-14 run in the Breeders' Cup

Sprint (G1) to close out the year and his career.

Out of the stakes-placed Meadow Flyer (Meadowlake), Henny Hughes headed to

the breeding shed with a 10-6-3-0, $1,124,820, record. He comes from the same

family as 1996 Gotham S. (G2) hero Romano Gucci (Aaron's Concorde), Grade 3

winners Gin Talking (Allen's Prospect) and Algar (Horatius), and Australian

Group 3 scorers Papillion (Old Spice) and Mobile Link (Is It True).

Purchased privately by Darley following his Tremont score, Henny Hughes

stands at that organization's farm near Lexington, Kentucky, for a $25,000 live

foal fee, stands and nurses.
