California shipper Soi Phet was unable to perform up to his best in Monday's

Grade 1 Tokyo Daishoten at Ohi Racecourse, trailing home last of 16 behind

repeat winner Hokko Tarumae.

Trainer Leonard Powell reported via Twitter that Soi Phet bled:

"Unfortunately, Soi Phet bled significantly in #daishoten @tck_keiba. Very

disappointing result but hoping for a safe journey home for him."

With Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux in the irons, Soi Phet tracked the early

pace along with favored Hoko Tarumae before retreating from contention. Hokko

Tarumae overtook pacesetter Copano Rickey and established his supremacy by four

commanding lengths. Regular rider Hideaki Miyuki was aboard as he completed

about 1 1/4 miles on the dirt in 2:03.

Copano Rickey, the second choice, easily held the runner-up spot while 1 1/2

lengths clear of Summit Stone. Three-year-old Happy Sprint rallied from well off

the pace for fourth. Roman Legend, the 2012 Tokyo Daishoten winner, wound up

fifth, and the venerable eight-year-old Wonder Acute was seventh.

Hokko Tarumae was registering his seventh career Grade 1 victory. Most

recently victorious in the December 7 Champions Cup at Chukyo (the rebranded

Japan Cup Dirt), the son of King Kamehameha also sports wins in last year's

Tokyo Daishoten, JBC Classic, Teio Sho and Kashiwa Kinen as well as the January

29 Kawasaki Kinen. He has compiled an overall mark of 27-14-3-5, including

placings in such events as the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Japan Cup Dirt and

this season's February Stakes.

Although last of 16 in the March 29 Dubai World Cup, Hokko Tarumae could try

again on Meydan's new dirt track in 2015. Trainer Katsuichi Nishiura mentioned

the possibility after his Champions Cup victory, penciling in the same itinerary

on the way. If he sticks to that original plan, a title defense in the January

28 Kawasaki Kinen would be up next, followed by another crack at the February

Stakes at Tokyo February 22.
