Honey Ryder challenges males
Grade 1 winner HONEY RYDER (Lasting Approval) will meet 10 male rivals in
Saturday's $300,000 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf S. (G1). After capturing
the Flower Bowl Invitational S. (G1), Sheepshead Bay H. (G2), Orchid H. (G3) and
Robert G. Dick Memorial Breeders' Cup S. last season, the Todd Pletcher charge
concluded 2006 with a commendable third in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf
(G1). Honey Ryder will make her six-year-old debut on Saturday, and John
Velazquez will retain the mount aboard the gray mare.
Last year's winner, EINSTEIN (Brz) (Spend a Buck), will go for a title defense in the 1 3/8-mile affair. The Helen Pitts-trained horse will be making his second start off a lengthy layoff, finishing a decent fourth in a tough allowance/optional claiming event on January 31. The nine-year-old REVVED UP (Sultry Song) merits respect. Conditioned by Christophe Clement, the gray gelding owns a three-race winning skein, taking the Bonnie Heath Turf Cup H. at Calder most recently and the Sycamore Breeders' Cup S. (G3) two back, and relishes marathon distances. RAMAZUTTI (Honor Grades), an uncoupled runner from Pletcher's stable, exits a good win in the Mac Diarmida H. (G2) at Gulfstream Park, rating off the pace before striking in a change of tactics. Mac Diarmida third-placer INTERPATATION (Langfuhr), a stout late runner, is also entered. Grade 2 victor GO BETWEEN (Point Given), third behind Lava Man (Slew City Slew) in the Sunshine Millions Turf at Santa Anita last out, captured the Palm Beach S. (G3) over the course last year and could be a factor here with Edgar Prado up. Recent Gulfstream allowance winner DYNANTONIA (Dynaformer) will lead the post parade under Cornelio Velasquez. Next comes Honey Ryder; JAMBALAYA (Langfuhr), Javier Castellano; Go Between; FRI GUY (Theatrical [Ire]), Manoel Cruz; Ramazutti, Chris DeCarlo; MUSTANFAR (Unbridled), Fernando Jara; Revved Up, Eddie Castro; EMBOSSED (Ire) (Mark of Esteem [Ire]), Mark Guidry; Einstein, Rafael Bejarano; and Interpatation, Tom Turner. All starters will carry 123 pounds except Honey Ryder, who receives a five-pound allowance.

Earlier on the Gulfstream program, an overflow field of 16 three-year-olds has been
entered in the
Hallandale Beach S. Only 12 will be allowed to start in the 1 1/16-mile turf
test, and Tropical Park Derby (G3) winner SOLDIER'S DANCER (Lost Soldier) is
among the top contenders. Tropical Park Derby runner-up SEDGEFIELD (Smart
Strike), who exits an easy allowance score at Gulfstream, is part of the main
body of the field, and FERNANDO PO (Johannesburg), who edged Soldier's Dancer
when taking the Kris S. S. at Calder in early December, has also been assured a
spot in the starting gate. The well-matched field also includes stakes winner
TWILIGHT METEOR (Smart Strike), who will make his seasonal debut for Pletcher.
