Hook and Ladder colt tops Fasig-Tipton

Hip No. 315, a bay colt by Hook and Ladder, brought the top price at the

Fasig-Tipton's New York-Bred Preferred Yearling Sale at the Humphrey S. Finney

Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, New York, when selling to Buzz Chace, agent, for

$230,000 at the second and final session on Sunday. Consigned by Lakland North,

agent, the March 18 youngster is out of the winning mare Moneymakinmamma (In

Excess [Ire]), who is out of 1997 Santa Ynez S. (G3) victress and Santa Anita

Oaks (G1) runner-up Queen of Money (Corporate Report). Queen of Money also

produced Quiet Cash (Real Quiet), a multiple stakes winner this year, and stakes

heroine Pocketfullofpesos (In Excess [Ire]).

The second-highest selling yearling was a chestnut colt by Johannesburg who

sold to Richlyn Farm for $182,000. Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent for Sugar

Maple Farm, as Hip 327, the March 14 colt is out of the winning Miswaki mare Out

of the Buggy. The colt's second dam is the stakes-winning and 1992 Rare Treat H.

(G3) runner-up Embracing (Regal Embrace), and he hails from the same female line

as German highweight and 2003 Arlington Million (G1) runner-up Kaieteur (Marlin).

For the session there were 49 yearlings who sold for an aggregate

$2,652,000, an increase of 6.4 percent from last year's comparative session when

50 horses were purchased for $2,491,500. The average price jumped 8.6 percent,

from $49,830 to $54,122. The median dropped 30 percent from $50,000 to $35,000.

Overall, 101 horses sold for $5,294,500, an increase of 6.4 percent from last

year when 105 yearlings sold for $4,975,500. The average price climbed 10.6

percent, from $47,386 to $52,421, while median price fell by 22.2 percent, from

$45,000 to $35,000.
