How's Your Halo shocks in Richter Scale

Last updated: 2/14/09 3:26 PM

Trainer Brian Prichard's HOW'S YOUR HALO (Halo's Image) stalked the front-running

Ikigai (Whywhywhy) from the start of Saturday's $150,000

Richter Scale Sprint S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park, wore down that rival in the

stretch and pulled off to record a half-length upset as the 47-1 longest shot in

the field of six.

Ikigai quickly moved to the fore when the gates opened, setting splits of :22

1/5, :44 3/5 and 1:09 1/5 while closely tracked by How's Your Halo just to his

outside. Jockey Juan Leyva and How's Your Halo held their position just off

Ikigai's heels rounding the turn, then slowly began gaining ground throughout

the lane. The pair eventually drew off to finish seven furlongs on the fast dirt

in 1:23.

How's Your Halo rewarded his few, but faithful, supporters with payouts of

$96.20, $23.40 and $9.80 while keying the $263.40 exacta. Ikigai easily held

second by 2 1/4 lengths over Bold Start (Jump Start), who had trailed in third

over the final five-eighths. The pacesetter was worth $3.80 and $3.40 as the near 2-1 second

choice while show gave back $5.20 at 6-1. The trifecta returned $1,226.20 and

even-money favorite Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) rounded out the 6-5-3-2

superfecta that paid $2,733.60. Ling Ling Qi (Yonaguska) and Now a Victor

(Yankee Victor) completed the order under the wire.

How's Your Halo is no stranger to stakes competition, taking the 2006 Eillo

S. and last season's Radar Love S. He broke through with a first graded win

here, though, having previously run second in the 2008 Smile Sprint H. (G2) and

third in the 2006 Kenny Noe Jr. H. (G3). The bay six-year-old improved his line

to 34-7-9-4 with this score and has accumulated $460,898 in lifetime earnings.

Bred by White Cross Farm in Florida, How's Your Halo is out of the

stakes-winning Say How You Feel (Little Current), making him a half-brother to

the unraced juvenile filly Naval Aviator (R. Cooper) and a full sibling to an

unnamed yearling colt. This is the same family as recent Sunshine Millions

Classic winner and Grade 3 hero It's a Bird (Birdonthewire).
