Indygo Mountain to miss a few days of training

Last updated: 12/19/08 4:32 PM

Clarence Scharbauer Jr.'s highly regarded juvenile INDYGO MOUNTAIN (A.P.

Indy) -- scratched during the post parade of Thursday's 6TH race, an allowance

event for two-year-olds, at Fair Grounds -- was standing comfortably in his

stall Friday morning while trainer Bret Calhoun updated his colt's status.

"(Indygo Mountain) was fine yesterday morning," Calhoun explained. "However,

(jockey) Jamie (Theriot) thought he felt like he might be a little 'off' in the

left hind while he warming up. You don't want to take a chance with a horse like

this, and when we brought him back to the barn we confirmed there was some heat

in that area, like there might be an abscess forming. Or he may just have kicked

a wall in the stall or something like that.

"Anyway, he's doing a lot better today," Calhoun continued. "There's less

heat back there, and we blocked it off and confirmed the problem was in his foot

so we took the shoes off.

"We'll keep our eye on him for a couple of days, and if he seems OK we'll put

the shoes back on and see how he's doing," the trainer added. "In a best case

scenario, he'll only miss a few days of training. These kinds of things happen,

but unfortunately they always seem to happen to the good ones."

Indygo Mountain made his career debut a runner-up effort over Keeneland's

Polytrack on October 15. He returned to capture his second try, recording an

impressive 6 1/4-length tally on November 19, this time over Churchill Downs'

traditional dirt.

Scharbauer, whose family won the 1987 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1)

with Alysheba, spent $600,000 to acquire Indygo Mountain at the 2007 Keeneland

September Yearling Sale.

The allowance Indygo Mountain was scratched from on Thursday was won by Uno

Mas (Macho Uno), a Steve Asmussen runner who will now point for the January 10

Lecomte S. (G3).
