Inglis Classic Sale sets records

Last updated: 2/13/06 8:26 PM

The 2006 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale wrapped up at Newmarket yesterday with

new records for average and median. Over the course of the two-day auction, 376

yearlings sold for A$14,303,500, an average of A$38,041 and a median of

A$30,000. The average and median both increased by nearly 10 percent from the

A$34,611 and A$27,500 achieved in 2005, respectively.

"A great result, and it is especially pleasing to achieve a new record

average and record median, a good indication of the strength of the market at

the moment," Managing Director Reg Inglis said. "There has been a great crowd

here over the last two day's selling and I'd like to say a big thank you to all

the vendors and buyers for supporting this sale. We look forward to the Premier

and Easter sales with great anticipation."

Monday's highest price of A$160,000 was shared by a pair of youngsters, Lot

No. 472, a colt from the first crop of Bel Esprit, and Lot 523, a filly by

Choisir. Huntsworth Stud offered the Bel Esprit colt out of Floribunda (Brief

Truce), and the bay sold to Lee Curtis.

"I think he is outstanding," the trainer said. "He looks an early-coming type

and just a beautiful-looking colt."

Little Wych consigned the day's top filly, a chestnut by Choisir from the

stakes-producer Icecapade (Genghiz). Trainer Anthony Cummings purchased the

filly from the family of Elvstroem.

"I thought she was a lovely filly from a sensational family," Cummings said.

"It's very much a fillies family, too, and having tried several times already

this year to buy a Choisir yearling, I also think she represents exceptionally

good value."
