Jacaranda wires Tempted

Barry K. Schwartz's Jacaranda took the field wire-to-wire in her stakes debut

in Sunday's Grade 3, $250,000

Tempted

Stakes at Aqueduct.

The Michael Hushion charge broke out at the start bumping with 1-2 favorite

Enchantress, before taking command to post an opening quarter in :23 1/5.

Jacaranda slowly started to distance herself from the field while putting up a

half-mile in :47 3/5. Enchantress pressed the pace in second for as long as she

could before fading around the turn.

Jacaranda ran six furlongs in 1:40 1/5 as she maintained a two-length lead.

The two-year-old filly was asked in the upper stretch by jockey Jose Ortiz and

responded. She edged clear in the stretch and prevailed by 3 1/2 lengths in the

end. Sent off as the 9-2 third choice, the chestnut rewarded her backers with

$11.40 for the win.

"I've worked her in the mornings and she's a very nice filly," Ortiz said.

"She had a lot of trouble the first time out, but she still won. This time, the

only question was whether she could handle the distance, and she did. I put her

on the lead and she relaxed very well. She got a little tired at the end, but it

was her first time at a mile. Mike Hushion did a great job with her."

Paulassilverlining claimed runner-up by 1 1/2 lengths over Save Rock and Roll

in third. Sunday Sonnet, Enchantress, Miss Always Ready and Harlan's Honor

completed the order under the wire.

Jacaranda covered one mile over the good main track in 1:40 1/5.

"I loved the way the race set up, the way she managed to stay up in there,

and that he didn't have to send her hard in the first part," Hushion said. "I

guess it (bodes well for her going farther). You look at the time and scratch

your head, but we know there were some very, very talented fillies behind her."

The daughter of Congrats broke her maiden by five lengths over a muddy

Belmont track on September 21 in her racing debut. She banked $150,000 to

increase her bankroll to $195,000 from two career starts.

Bred in Kentucky by Vinery LLC, Jacaranda is out of the Distorted Humor mare

Baffled, who is a full sister to Dubai Group 1-placed Surfer and is a

half-sister to Grade 1 victor Emcee. Jacaranda is a half-sister to Grade 1

scorer Constitution. The chestnut's third dam is Horns Gray, who produced Grade

1 winner Awesome Humor.

Jacaranda sold as a yearling for $250,000 at the Keeneland September sale.
