Japanese interests get OBS session topper for $400,000

A colt from the first crop of Grade 1 winner Scat Daddy brought a final bid

of $400,000 from K.K. Eishindo, leading all offerings Tuesday at the first

session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in

Training in Ocala, Florida. Offered by Old South Farm, agent, the Kentucky-bred

sported Hip No. 137.

The March 2-foaled juvenile is out of Madagascat (Tale of the Cat), a

half-sister to Grade 3 winner Lindsay Jean (Saint Ballado) and the stakes

winners Honour Colony (Honour and Glory) and Crozet (Charismatic). The colt's

third dam was Oceana (Northern Dancer), a full sister to English and Irish

juvenile champion and noted sire Storm Bird, as well as multiple Canadian

champion Northernette. This is also the family of Grade 3 winner Indian Ocean

(Stormy Atlantic).

The session-topper turned in the fastest one-furlong work at the first Under

Tack Show last Friday, working in :9 4/5.

A colt from the first crop of champion and classic winner Street Sense

brought $380,000. Consigned by Classic Bloodstock (Danzel Brendemuehl), Hip 226

was gaveled down to trainer Todd Pletcher, agent for Mike Repole.

The April 17 colt was produced by Regally Appealing (Valid Appeal), winner of

the 1999 Adirondack S. (G2) and half-sister to stakes-winning producer Regal

Miss Copelan (Copelan) and the stakes-placed Patti's Regal Song (Unbridled's

Song). Regal Miss Copelan herself is the dam of Grade 2 victor and sire Rockport

Harbor (Unbridled's Song).

The juvenile, whose second dam was the stakes-winning Regal Pennant (Banner

Bob), worked one furlong in :10 at the Under Tack Show.

Two gray colts brought $350,000 each on Tuesday. The first was Hip 82, a son

of Mizzen Mast out of the unraced Im Cruising Dixie (Dixie Union). Consigned by

Paul Sharp, agent, the April 8 foal, who also worked one-eighth in :10 at the

Under Tack Show, was bought by Buzz Chace, agent for Richard Santulli.

Im Cruising Dixie counts as half-siblings the multiple stakes winners

Patsyprospect (Personal Flag) and Terreavigne (Belong to Me). All were produced

by Im a Star Prospect (Mr. Prospector), the second dam of Toocleverforwords

(Arch), who won the January 1 Stage Door Betty H. (G3) at Calder, and the Grade

3-placed stakes winner Megoman (Traitor). This is also the family of Grade 2

winner Star Gallant (My Gallant).

Also bringing $350,000, from Spendthrift Farm, was Hip 238, a colt from the

second crop of Grade 2 winner Congrats out of Rosekris Point (Point Given), a

half-sister to stakes winner Bountempo (Cape Town). Consigned by Tradewinds

Farm, agent, the Florida-bred is from the family of Canadian Horse of the Year

Benburb (Dr. Carter) and his multiple stakes-winning half-sister Lady Aloma (Cozzene),

who in turn produced Canadian champion turf mare Chopinina (Lear Fan), Grade 3

winner Despite the Odds (Speightstown) and the Grade 3-placed stakes winner

Karra Kul (Strawberry Road [Aus]).

The March 22-foaled juvenile recorded a quarter-mile work at the Under Tack

Show in :21 2/5.

Tuesday's session saw an increase in gross but a decline in average over last

year's corresponding session. At the session's conclusion, 117 horses had

brought $10,332,000, an increase of 27 percent over last year when 84 juveniles

had grossed $8,126,000. However, the session average dipped 8.8 percent, from

$96,738 to $88,222. The median declined 18.6 percent, from $70,000 to $57,000.
