Kafwain sires first winner

Last updated: 6/3/07 8:52 PM

Multiple Grade 2 hero KAFWAIN (Cherokee Run) was represented by his first

winner at stud when his juvenile daughter Kadira captured Churchill's 6TH race

on Sunday. Trained by David Vance and piloted by Larry Melancon, the 19-1 shot

took over at the three-eighths pole and pulled away to a convincing 3 3/4-length

score, stopping the timer in :57 3/5 for five furlongs.

Kafwain made headlines before he ever began his racing career, bringing a bid of $720,000 at the 2002 Fasig-Tipton February Two-Year-Olds in

Training Sale from The Thoroughbred Corp. Trained by Bob Baffert for the

entirety of his career, Kafwain was third in his debut and followed that with a

sharp maiden score, prior to capturing the Best Pal S. (G3) two races later.

Following a placing in the Del Mar Futurity (G2), the Kentucky-bred was best in

the Norfolk S. (G2) and was second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) in his

next try. The dark bay began his sophomore campaign with a scintillating victory

in the San Vicente S. (G2) and concluded his shortened career with a solid third

in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) before retiring with an 11-4-2-2, $715,848, career line.

The seven-year-old is out of the multiple stakes-winning Swazi's Moment

(Moment of Hope), herself second in the 1993 Princess S. (G2). Kafwain has an

unraced  two-year-old half-brother named Strip Mine (Mineshaft).

The freshman sire stands at Darley at Jonabell, near Lexington, Kentucky, for

a fee of $10,000 live foal.
