Keeneland catalogs 1,753 for January sale
|
Keeneland has cataloged 1,753 horses for its 2010 January Horses of All Ages Sale, to be held Monday through Friday. Comprising the 1,753 horses are 730 broodmares, 691 yearlings, 254 racing or broodmare prospects, 77 horses of racing age, and one share in Monarchos. Though as of Sunday evening Keeneland had listed on its website 342 outs from the sale, activity in the Keeneland barns was as brisk as the temperatures. Many consignors reported strong activity among their consignments, especially among the short yearlings and broodmare prospects.
"So far, the trade has been good for a cold, January Sunday," Brookdale Sales' Joe Seitz said. "We've seen a lot of faces we see at every sale, plus a few new ones, which is always encouraging."
"The traffic has been very steady so far," agreed Martha Jane Muholland of Mullholland Springs. "In fact, one of the best January Sales I've ever attended was knee-deep in snow about a decade ago and it was great. I call it the 'snow day effect' when people realize there isn't much else they can do at home, so they come to the sale."

"We've been really, really busy this morning," said Kitty Taylor, owner of
Warrendale. "We've shown a lot of broodmare prospects and a lot of short
yearlings and the mares that are in foal to the quality horses like Bernardini
and Tiznow are getting a lot of action."
"The January Sale offers a particularly good selection of short yearlings,"
said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's Director of Sales. "Given the strength of
November weanling sales, it will provide another opportunity for the market to
move forward as the industry continues to adjust to the new market reality."
Keeneland will offer yearlings by such prominent freshman
stallions as After Market, Any Given Saturday, Corinthian, Discreet Cat, Half Ours,
Hard Spun, Jazil, Lawyer Ron and Street Sense, among others.
Established sires such as Arch, Birdstone, Candy Ride (Arg),
Distorted Humor, Dixie Union, Elusive Quality, Empire Maker, Forestry,

Strike, Speightstown, Street Cry (Ire), Tapit, Tiznow and Unbridled's Song,
among others, also are represented by yearlings.
Broodmares covered by promising young stallions After Market, Any Given
Saturday, Big Brown, Corinthian, Curlin, Hard Spun, Henrythenavigator, Lawyer Ron, Street Sense and War Front, among others, will be
