Southern Equine Stable LLC's HELLO LUCKY (Lucky Lionel) moved into contention
turning for home and ran down 8-5 choice Selvatica (Forestry) late to capture
at Santa Anita by a length on Saturday. The bay mare finished off six furlongs in 1:09 1/5 and gave back healthy mutuels of $68.60,
$27.80 and $15 at 33-1.
The pace was fast as Maryfield (Elusive Quality), Secret Scheme (Precocity),
Hystericalady (Distorted Humor) and Selvatica dueled four abreast through a
sharp opening quarter-mile in :21 2/5. Selvatica moved smartly while four-wide
to establish a half-length lead, reaching four furlongs in :44 1/5, and opened a
clear margin in the stretch, but she could not hold off the rally of Hello Lucky, who
was hitting her best stride for trainer Eric Guillot and jockey Michael Baze.
Selvatica was worth $4 and $3.40 while completing the $140.60 exacta ($1).
Babe Hall (El Corredor) stumbled at the break but rallied strongly from last to
gain third another 4 1/4 lengths back. The 24-1 shot paid $8.80 for the show,
and the trifecta ($1) was good for $2,286.50. Hystericalady concluded the
$12,055.50 superfecta ($1) (9-11-4-6) as the 9-2 third choice, and was trailed
by Mazella (Mazel Trick), Spirit to Spare (Pole Position), Maryfield, Secret Scheme, Nossa Cancao (Brz) (Fast Gold), Dancing Squall (River
Squall), Running Bobcats (Running Stag) and Katy Smiles (Limit Out).
Hello Lucky won her first race since eclipsing the 2005 Lakeway S. at Retama.
The five-year-old sports a 19-5-4-3 lifetime mark, with a bankroll that now
stands at $314,480. The miss also owns a win in the 2004 Anoakia S., with placings in the
Del Mar Debutante S. (G1), Sorrento S. (G3), Vallejo S. and C.E.R.F. H.
The winner was bred in the Sunshine State by Adena Springs and produced from
the stakes-placed Mystery Number (Secret Hello). She sold for only $4,000 at the
2003 OBS January sale. Hello Lucky counts the unraced
two-year-old named Bin Audit (Explicit) as a half-brother and has an unnamed yearling
half-brother by Lion Heart.
