Mandurah blazes mile in world record time on turf
|
The well-bred gelding MANDURAH (A.P. Indy) made a turf debut to remember at Monmouth Park on Sunday, sizzling one mile in a world-record 1:31.23 on a course officially listed as hard. A six-year-old son of French Group 3 queen Morning Pride (Ire) (Machiavellian), he eclipsed the former mark of 1:31.41 set by Mr. Light (Arg) on January 3, 2005, at Gulfstream Park. Sent off at odds of 10-1 in the 9TH race, a $55,500 starter handicap, the Grant Forster charge broke on top for Alex Solis and never looked back. Mandurah tore through fractions of :22.26, :44.76 and 1:08.13, extended his lead to five lengths in midstretch, and crossed the wire an 8 1/2-length winner.
"He's a very talented horse," Forster said. "We thought he'd like the firm turf at Monmouth, which he did very well."
Sunday's race was the first in the four-part Malouf Auto Group Starter Series, which runs all summer long at Monmouth. The race conditions were for three-year-olds and up which have started for a claiming price of $12,500 or less in 2009-2010 and have not won a stakes since becoming eligible. |
Mandurah is a full brother to Flashing, winner of last year's Test S. (G1),
Gazelle S. (G1) and Nassau County S. (G3). His third dam is Canadian champion
Kamar (Key to the Mint), who was honored as Broodmare of the Year in 1990.
Bred by Gainsborough Farm in Kentucky, Mandurah was originally trained by
Eoin Harty for Darley Stable. He created an impression in his career debut at
Gulfstream in January 2007, when overcoming a rough start to prevail by
three-quarters of a length. Mandurah was well beaten in his next two starts, but
rebounded when switching to Arlington Park's Polytrack to capture an
allowance/optional claimer by 5 1/2 front-running lengths. He failed to build on
that effort, however.
"We purchased him privately as a four-year-old and gelded him," Forster said.
"He always trained well in the morning, but didn't show up in the afternoon. But
over this winter we got him in some races and gained his confidence back."
Mandurah dropped quite some way down the claiming ladder before winning three
races at Oaklawn earlier this year. He has compiled a career mark of 21-6-2-0,
$124,717.
His connections plan to continue in the Malouf Auto Group Starter Series.
Next up is the 1 1/16-mile turf test on June 26.
The Malouf Series boasts a point system of 80 for first, 50 for second, 30
for third, 20 for fourth and 10 for unplaced. Any horse running in three of the
four series races will receive 40 bonus points. At the end of the series, a
$5,000 first prize will be awarded to the trainer of the horse with the most
accumulated points.
