McCann's Mojave fights back in All American
Mike Willman's homebred MCCANN'S MOJAVE (Memo [Chi]) took the lead turning
for home, was headed in midstretch by Putmeinyourwill (Old Trieste) and battled
back gamely to take the $150,000
S. (G3) at Golden Gate Fields by a neck
on Saturday. Tracking in third for the opening six furlongs on the Tapeta
surface, the seven-year-old effortlessly moved to the fore at the head of the
stretch and re-rallied late bravely under Frank Alvarado, clocking the 1 1/8-mile feature in 1:50. The Steve Specht trainee was sent off as the nearly 6-1
third choice and gave back $13.80, $7.40 and $4.20.
Putmeinyourwill settled well while on the inside early, swung to the outside
for the stretch drive and just missed in a big effort. The runner-up, who was
paired with Sharp Writer (Capote) in the wagering, finished a length clear of
third and paid $10.60 and $4.60 at 12-1. The exacta ($1) returned $51.10. Hello
Sunday (Fr) (Poliglote [GB]) was the unlucky one in the field as he steadied
sharply at the start and lacked room into the stretch, before flying home late
to garner the show. The 9-5 second choice was good for $3 while finishing off
the $179.30 trifecta ($1). Amazin Blue (Marquetry) capped the $2,173.10
superfecta ($1) (9-1-6-5) at nearly 50-1 and was trailed by Sir Gallovic (Victory Gallop),
Wanna Runner (El Corredor), 7-5 favorite and pacesetter Buzzards Bay (Marco
Bay), My Creed (Beau Genius) and Sharp Writer), while Lang Field (Langfuhr) was
scratched.
McCann's Mojave bagged his seventh career stakes win, adding to tallies
in the Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup H. (G2), Sunshine Millions Classic,
California Cup Classic H., Sensational Star H., Ack Ack H. and Union Square S.,
and he's placed in two graded events, including a runner-up finish in the 2005
Triple Bend Invitational H. (G1). The bay increased his bankroll to
$1,346,555 from a 29-11-2-0 mark.
The winner is the last foal out of multiple stakes heroine Joni U. Bar
(Nordic Prince).
