Robert Dubois' BOB'S PROUD MOMENT (Proud and True) showed incredible late

speed in the final stages of the $85,500

Miami Mile Breeders' Cup H. (G3) at

Calder Race Course on Monday to pull off an upset victory against 7-5 favorite Southern

Cal (Halo's Image). Settling back beneath jockey Manoel Cruz, the dark

bay four-year-old rated in midpack as Southern Cal opened the one-mile turf test

in :22 3/5, :46 and 1:11, leading by six lengths with a furlong to go. Bob's Proud

Moment was steadied in behind Gin Rummy Champ (Jeblar) at the quarter pole, but

got inside that rival and rallied to be up late, stopping the clock in 1:38 over

the yielding course. Dancing Master (Ire) (Nashwan) slipped through to the inside of the

winner, but was just edged out at the wire by a neck.

"He's the best horse I've ever had," trainer Douglas Potter said. "I've won

stakes with horses before him, but this is my first graded stakes in 13 years

training. I wasn't originally going to run him in this race, partly because he's

not Breeders' Cup eligible (ran for half the purse), but that would have left a

long time between races. His next start is the Flying Pidgeon (H. at Calder on

October 1)."

The winner returned $9.80, $6.20 and $3 at 7-2 while Dancing Master paid $15.20 and $5.60 at 21-1. Southern Cal

came home another 1 1/4 lengths back, returning $2.40 to show. Exotics returned $173.80

(exacta), $739.40 (trifecta) and $8,522.20 (8-1-9-6 superfecta). Gin Rummy

Champ, Go Directlyto Jail (Skip Trial), Cervelo (Skip Away), Gin and Sin (Go for

Gin), Magic Speed (Robyn Dancer) and Bachelor Blues (Smoke Glacken) rounded out

the order of finish. Mister Fotis (Diligence) and Nightmare Affair (Out of

Place) were scratched.

Bred in Florida by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dubois, Bob's Proud Moment is out of the

stakes-placed mare Promised Moment (Honest Moment), making him a half-brother to

Panama Run, a yearling filly by Concerto. This was Bob's Proud Moment's first

stakes victory. He previously placed in the Calder Derby (G3) and Mecke H. Bob's

Proud Moment improved his record to 28-4-6-3, $220,330.
