Mylute, Falling Sky breeze under the Twin Spires

Mylute, runner-up

to Revolutionary in the Louisiana Derby, continued his preparations

for the Kentucky Derby with a half-mile breeze in

:50 1/5 over the fast Churchill Downs track on Sunday morning.

"We moved the work up because the weather looks like it

could be bad the next few days," trainer Tom Amoss explained.

"It was a nice, easy

half-mile work. He's not much of a work horse by himself because he's kind of a

laid back, lazy guy, but he did fine. He'll have a significant work next week,

probably on Sunday (April 14), and anything we do after that will be easy

again."

Mylute has yet to score in a stakes event, but in addition to his Louisiana

Derby second has placed in the Delta Downs Jackpot and a pair of listed

contests.

The Midnight Lute colt is currently ranked

13th on the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" leaderboard. He was awarded 40 points for his second-place finish in the

Louisiana Derby and it is likely that his point total of 42 will be enough to

earn him a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.

Also working at Churchill Downs on Sunday was Falling Sky, winner of the Sam

F. Davis and most recently third in the Tampa Bay Derby.

Working after the renovation break at 8:30 a.m. (EDT), Falling Sky breezed

a bullet five furlongs in :59 3/5 for trainer John Terranova II.

"He worked great and he's going to go to the Arkansas Derby," Terranova said. "(The Arkansas Derby) was our original thought with this

horse and then we tossed around the idea of the Blue Grass, but I almost don't

want to switch surfaces with him at this point. I think he'd handle it fine, but

I think the Arkansas Derby makes a lot of sense."

Next Saturday's $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park will award

points to the top four finishers on a 100-40-20-10 scale as part of the second leg

of the championship series. Currently ranked 20th with 20 points, Falling Sky likely

needs a top three effort to earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby. A fourth-place finish

would likely place him "on the bubble."

Falling Sky, under Cassie Garcea, worked in company with

Balance of Power, who was guided by Juan Bernardini. The Silver Train gelding, a

half-brother to 2011 Arkansas Derby winner Archarcharch, captured his last two starts

at Tampa Bay Downs, the chestnut is under consideration for the $750,000

Illinois Derby on April 20 at Hawthorne.

Falling Sky, who will ship to Oaklawn on Wednesday, crossed

the wire in front of his workmate and had the fastest time of 13 at the

distance. Balance of Power was credited with a final time of 1:00.

With one decision down, Terranova next will make a decision

on the next race for his other Kentucky Derby contender, West Hills Giant.

"He's breezing tomorrow (Monday) at Belmont and then

there's a good chance he'll come to the Blue Grass or Lexington," Terranova

said. "We'll make a decision tomorrow."

The $200,000 Lexington at Keeneland on April 20 is a wild

card race on the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" and points will be awarded to the

top four finishers on a 20-8-4-2 scale.

Currently ranked 23rd on the leaderboard with 20

points, West Hill Giant likely needs a top three finish in the $750,000 Blue Grass

next Saturday or a win

in the Lexington to secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby. A fourth-place finish

in the Blue Grass or a runner-up effort in the Lexington likely would place him

on the outside looking in.

In other Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks news, a Tex

Sutton flight from Palm Beach, Florida, carrying several horses for trainer Todd

Pletcher, including probable Blue Grass starter Palace Malice and top Oaks

contenders Dreaming of Julia and Unlimited Budget, is scheduled to arrive in

Louisville on Monday evening.

Assistant trainer Whit Beckman said he expects the

horses to arrive at Churchill Downs at approximately 7:30 p.m. They will be

stabled in Barn 34.
