Naughty New Yorker proves too good for his rivals

Last updated: 8/24/05 8:36 PM

Fox Ride Farm's NAUGHTY NEW YORKER (Quiet American) trailed his five rivals

through the early stages of Wednesday's $150,000

Albany S.

at Saratoga and uncorked his

rally on the far turn, advancing to challenge for the lead in upper stretch and

prevailing by a half-length over Carminooch (Tomorrows Cat) following a lengthy

stretch battle. Trained by Pat Kelly, the sophomore colt wound up capturing two

legs of the Big Apple Triple for New York-bred three-year-olds, adding the

Albany to a score in the Mike Lee S. at Belmont Park and a third in the New York

Derby at Finger Lakes.

Dismissed as the 7-2 third choice in the field of six, Naughty New Yorker

gave back $9.40, $4.40 and $2.80 to his supporters and keyed the $99.50 exacta

with Carminooch, who rallied from off the pace at 11-1 and paid $8.40 and $3.70.

It was another nine lengths back to Gold and Roses (Gold Token), the 5-2 second

favorite, who returned $3 and capped the $307.50 trifecta (4-3-5). Mr. Malaprop

(Distorted Humor), 2-1 favorite Blue Sunday (A. P Jet) and Accountforthegold

(Successful Appeal) rounded out the order of finish.

Blue Sunday led the way through fractions of :23 2/5, :47 1/5 and 1:11 2/5 as

the eventual winner lagged in the back, and the complexion of the race changed

dramatically leaving the far turn as a duel developed between the late runners.

Naughty New Yorker wound up finishing 1 1/8 miles over the fast Saratoga track

in 1:50 4/5.

Bred in the Empire State by Dr. William B. Wilmot and Dr. Joan M. Taylor,

Naughty New Yorker was acquired for $145,000 at the 2004 OBS March

sale and earned his first stakes win in the Damon Runyan S. last year. He placed

in the Gotham S. (G3), Whirlaway S. and Count Fleet S. against open company

earlier this season and has now earned $360,607 from a 15-4-4-3 line. He hails

from the Known Fact mare Naughty Natisha, who is also the dam of stakes winner

Pupil (Unbridled) and an unnamed 2005 colt by Lemon Drop Kid.
