Nine set for Coaching Club American Oaks
Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner LEMONS FOREVER (Lemon Drop Kid) and Mother Goose S.
(G1) runner-up PINE ISLAND (Arch) highlight a field of nine sophomore fillies
entered to Saturday's $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Belmont Park.
The 1 1/4-mile test also includes European invader VAGUE (Elusive Quality),
Grade 2 winners WONDER LADY ANNE L (Real Quiet) and TEAMMATE (A.P. Indy), and
SUGAR SHAKE (Awesome Again), who will make her stakes debut off a pair of
impressive victories at Belmont for trainer Bobby Frankel.
Lemons Forever earned a brief freshening following her Kentucky Oaks upset at
47-1 and returned from the nearly two-month rest to finish fourth as the favorite
in the Mother Goose last time. The Dallas Stewart-trained lass will keep Mark
Guidry in the saddle on Saturday. Pine Island opened her racing career with two
straight wins this year and finished a good second when making her stakes bow in
the Mother Goose. Conditioned by Shug McGaughey, the dark bay filly will receive
first-time Lasix in the C.C.A. Oaks.
Multiple Grade 3 heroine BAGHDARIA (Royal Academy) will make her first New
York appearance on Saturday off a smart half-length victory in the Iowa Oaks
(G3), and UNBRIDLED BELLE (Broken Vow) will test graded company for the first
time after winning the Go for Wand S. at Delaware Park most recently. MISS SHOP
(Deputy Minister) exits a score in the grassy Castle Royale S. at Belmont.
The C.C.A. Oaks is the final leg of the New York Triple Tiara, but Acorn S. (G1) and Mother
Goose winner Bushfire (Louis Quatorze) is sitting this one out.
In post position order, the C.C.A. Oaks contestants are Teammate, Cornelio Velasquez;
Lemons Forever; Miss Shop, Richard Migliore; Wonder Lady Anne L, Edgar Prado;
Sugar Shake, John Velazquez; Baghdaria, Fernando Jara; Pine Island, Javier
Castellano; Vague, Kent Desormeaux; and Unbridled Belle, Ramon Dominguez.
Each filly will carry 121 pounds.
