No surprise this time as Slew's Tizzy wins Lone Star Derby
An upset winner of the Lexington S. (G2) in his previous outing, SLEW'S TIZZY
(Tiznow) lived up to his favorite billing in Saturday's $300,000
(G3), rallying to a 1 3/4-length score. The Joseph LaCombe homebred rated in
third as Mr. Nightlinger (Indian Charlie) ripped off early splits in :22 2/5 and
:46 3/5 over the sloppy, sealed Texas track. He began to narrow the gap on the
backstretch and was a half-length back in second through three-quarters in 1:12
1/5. After battling briefly in upper stretch with the pacesetter, Slew's Tizzy
surged to the front in midstretch, drawing away in the final sixteenth to
complete 1 1/16 miles in 1:45 2/5.
Trained by Greg Fox and ridden by Robby Albarado, Slew's Tizzy returned $7,
$4.40 and $3.40 as the 5-2 choice in the 10-horse field. Moyer's Pond (Monarchos)
closed late to grab second at 12-1, paying $11.40 and $7, and it was three parts
of a length back to Mr. Nightlinger and Forty Grams (Distorted Humor), with the
latter catching the pacesetter in the final stride for the dead-heat. Mr.
Nightlinger, who was off at 28-1, gave back $4.60, and the 9-2 Forty Grams was
good for $2.80. The exacta totaled $100.20, the 5-3-6 trifecta with Mr. Nightlinger
was worth $776.40, and the 5-3-2 trifecta with Forty Grams yielded $213.20. The
5-3-6-2 superfecta paid $3,713.40, and the 5-3-2-6 superfecta was $2,855.60.
Reporting for Duty (Deputy Commander), Takedown (Point Given), Reata's Rocket
(Cape Canaveral), Slew By Slew (Slew City Slew), Taksent (Mutakddim) and Harrow
Land (Graeme Hall) rounded out the order of finish.
Bred in the Bluegrass State, Slew's Tizzy broke his maiden in mid-January and
made his stakes debut in the February 10 Risen Star S. (G3), but he lost his
jockey after clipping heels entering the stretch at Fair Grounds. The dark bay colt
recorded an unplaced finish in the Louisiana Derby (G2) next out and then posted
a 40-1 upset in the Lexington, leading wire-to-wire for a 3 1/2-length score at Keeneland. His connections resisted the temptation to send him to the Kentucky
Derby (G1), and Slew's Tizzy justified that move with a convincing tally on
Saturday. He's now earned $385,252 from a 7-3-0-0 line.
Slew's Tizzy is out of the winning Hepatica (Slewpy), who is also the dam of a juvenile
full brother to the winner named Slew's Tiznow, a yearling filly by Hennessy and
a 2007 filly by Deputy Commander. The 11-year-old mare is a half-sister to Grade
3 winner Best Dress (Jaklin Klugman).
