Notonthesamepage romps in Spectacular Bid

Last updated: 1/3/09 6:08 PM

Ken and Sarah Ramsey's homebred NOTONTHESAMEPAGE (Catienus) had disappointed

in the 1 1/16-mile Breeders' Futurity (G1) last time out at Keeneland, but he

made a triumphant return to a sprint distance in Saturday's $100,000

Spectacular Bid S. going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park. The Wesley Ward pupil proceeded to

romp by 8 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:08.48, just missing the track record

by .02.

After breaking from the rail, Notonthesamepage took command through an

opening quarter in :21 4/5 while being closely accompanied by Under Contract

(Three Wonders). The front runner began to kick away from his rivals when

ripping a half-mile in :44 3/5, and he was never threatened thereafter. The

chestnut opened up a 2 1/2-length margin through five furlongs in a torrid :56

2/5 and bolted home as much the best beneath Elvis Trujillo. Dispatched as the

9-2 third choice, Notonthesamepage returned $11.40, $5.40 and $5.20.

"The way he ran today it looks like he could have gone on longer," Ward said.

"Mr. Ramsey has said he would like to try and stretch him out again at some

point."

"I wasn't surprised with the way he ran at all," Trujillo said. "This horse

worked real well leading up to the race. I never felt challenged, and you pretty

much saw the results."

You Luckie Mann (Exchange Rate), who had been stalking in third early,

improved his position and tried to make a race of it turning for home, but he

had no answer to the winner's firepower. The runner-up gave back $3.60 and $3.40

as the 8-5 second choice. Another 4 1/4 lengths adrift came the late-running

longshot Bee Cee Cee (Songandaprayer), who got up for third and paid $8.40 at

54-1. The 6-5 favorite, Silent Valor (Lion Heart), tracked the pace while wide,

flattened out entering the stretch and wound up fourth. The $1 exotics totaled

$16.80 (exacta), $190.50 (trifecta) and $530.60 (1-2-8-7 superfecta). Silent

Valor crossed the wire 11 lengths ahead of Under Contract, who was followed in

turn by Jazzandthemagician (Birdstone), Put It Back Twenty (Put It Back) and

Vinnies Wild Tale (West Acre).

With this first stakes victory on his resume, Notonthesamepage increased his

earnings to $109,078 from his 6-2-1-1 record. He broke his maiden impressively

in his second career start last April, powering to a track-record score in a 4

1/2-furlong event at Churchill Downs. Notonthesamepage went on to finish a clear

second in the Tyro S. and fifth to Vineyard Haven (Lido Palace [Chi]) in the Hopeful S. (G1).

Stretching out to two turns in the Breeders' Futurity, Notonthesamepage set the

pace before tiring to finish last of 11.

"He had issues with his throat and bleeding last summer, which explains his

last couple of races," Ward revealed, "but it looks like that's past him now.

After they run a huge race like he did today, I like to give them at least a

month before they run back."

The Kentucky-bred was produced by the winning Cure the Blues mare Blue

Holiday, whose youngest offspring are an unnamed juvenile colt and a yearling

filly, both by Kitten's Joy. This is the family of Grade 1 hero and classy

sprinter Bedside Promise (Honest Pleasure).
