Numbers soar at Tattersalls Ireland's November Flat Sale

Last updated: 11/14/10 8:08 PM

Tattersalls Ireland's November Flat Sale featured one of the first offerings

at auction by Papal Bull, and it was a weanling colt by that Coolagown Stud

resident who topped the day when selling for 25,000. Consigned as

Hip No. 40 by Bishopstown Stud, the March-foaled bay is related to the German champion

Flamingo Road (Acatenango) and 2008 Irish Derby (Ire-G1) hero Frozen Fire (Montjeu

[Ire]) and was secured by BBA Ireland.

Of the yearlings, two colts shared top billing when selling for

20,000. Jamie Railton snapped up Hollyhill Stud's

Hip 124, from the first crop of Dutch Art, who is a half-brother to Group

3-placed Jakarta Jazz (Marju), while Kilronan Stud was the name on the docket

for Knockanilaun Stables's Hip 141, a colt from the extended family of multiple

highweight Pentire who is by High Chaparral (Ire).

Among the fillies, a daughter of 2010 first-season sire sensation Iffraaj proved popular when selling to

Jim McCartan for 16,000. Hip 187 from the draft of Greenville House Stud is from

the family of this year's Racing Post Trophy (Eng-G1) runner-up Seville (Galileo

[Ire]).

At the close of play, the clearance rate suffered as it had 12 months

ago, with only a third of the lots on offer managing to find a buyer, but the

average of 4,115 and median of

1,600 represented jumps of 76 percent and 23

percent, respectively, over last year's corresponding figures of

€2,344 average and €1,300 median. The

€242,800 gross rose 73 percent on the 2009

total of €140,650.

"This sale has followed the advances made by the majority of sales held at

Tattersalls Ireland this year with a 73 percent increase in turnover and it was

particularly pleasing to see such strong yearling trade," Tattersalls Ireland's

Managing Director George Mernagh said. "There has been a great

mix of European buyers including those from Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia,

Czech Republic and Italy. We are delighted with this year's sales season given

the challenging economic environment and in particular to see a 15 percent

increase in calendar year turnover.

"On the flat side, our September Yearling

Sale has continued to grow and this year's sale was no exception. We again had

an abundance of UK and overseas purchasers. The 150,000 Tattersalls Ireland

Super Auction S. has proven an attractive incentive for Irish and UK

purchasers and we look forward to improving the quality of next year's sale. Our

New Breeze- Up Sale next April also presents another opportunity for vendors to

showcase their horses in Ireland."
