OBS shows gains at second juvenile session

Last updated: 4/20/10 7:33 PM

A slew of six-figure offerings, which were noticeably absent on Monday,

propelled the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2010 Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds

in Training into positive territory on Tuesday at the second session of the

four-day auction in Ocala, Florida. Highest among these was Hip No. 508, a Pico

Central (Brz) filly that went for $200,000 to Steve Shahinian, agent for Harvey

Clarke. The Florida-bred was consigned by Eddie Woods, agent.

The session-topper was produced from the unraced Strawberrydaiquiri (Cherokee

Run), a half-sister to the Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Wimbledon (Wild Rush),

and is from the family of multiple Grade 3 winner Mining Burrah (Mining).

The juvenile was previously a $9,000 OBS August yearling and worked three

furlongs in :33 at last Wednesday's under tack show. It was the co-fastest move

at the distance.

The session's highest-priced colt went through the ring a short time later,

Hip 511, a son of City Zip, sold to Mike McCarty for $190,000. The Kentucky-bred

was consigned by Ricky Leppala, agent.

The colt was produced by Stylish Manner (Touch Gold), a half-sister to the

Grade 3-winning Kiss the Devuil (Kris S.). Another notable from the family is

Grade 1 winner Nell's Briquette (Lanyon), the dam of English Group 2 winners

Sanquirico (Lypheor [GB]) and Love the Groom (Blushing Groom [Fr]).

Previously a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling, the colt worked one

furlong in :9 4/5 at the under tack show, the co-fastest trial at the distance.

On Tuesday, 209 juveniles grossed $6,441,000, a rise of 28.2 percent from the

corresponding session in 2009 when 211 head brought $5,025,300. The session

average also increased 29.4 percent, from $23,817 to $30,818, while the median

rose 33.3 percent, from $15,000 to $20,000.

After two days of selling, $11,020,100 has been realized from the sale of 405

horses, a rise of 5.1 percent from this point a year ago when 420 juveniles

brought $10,482,800. The average has risen from $24,959 to $27,210, a rate of 9

percent.

The sale runs through Thursday with sessions beginning daily at 10:30 a.m.

(EDT). For more information, visit obssales.com.
