At Santa Anita on Monday, champion sprinter MIDNIGHT LUTE (Real Quiet)

scorched five furlongs in a bullet :56 4/5, easily the fastest of 52 moves at

the distance on the Pro-Ride. The Bob Baffert charge, who was a troubled 10th in

the Pat O'Brien H. (G2), is preparing to defend his Sprint (G1) title.

"Midnight Lute actually worked a half," Baffert said. "They got him galloping

out, but he actually went :45 or something like that. I got him in :57 (for five

furlongs). It was a really strong workout, and that's what I wanted."

Del Mar Futurity (G1) victor MIDSHIPMAN (Unbridled's Song), runner-up

in the Norfolk S. (G1) last time out, steamed his three-quarters in a bullet

1:11 2/5. A top contender in the Juvenile (G1), the Baffert pupil posted the

best of 16 trials at the trip.

"Midshipman went really nice, probably the best he's looked," Baffert said.

"I like the way he came out of the Norfolk. He's fitter, and he's more relaxed.

I really like the way he went in his work today."

Del Mar Futurity near-misser CORONET OF A BARON (Pure Prize), also

bound for the Juvenile, finished up in 1:13 3/5.

Multiple Grade 1 winner STUDENT COUNCIL (Kingmambo), fifth as the

defending champion in the Pacific Classic (G1), worked six panels in 1:12 2/5 in

advance of the Classic (G1). Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan was in the irons for the

move.

"He worked real well this morning," trainer Steve Asmussen noted. "He'll have

about 60 days between races, and we feel he's sitting on a real big race."

Grade 1 star VACARE (Lear Fan), a game second in the Yellow Ribbon S.

(G1), covered four furlongs in :49 in preparation for the Filly & Mare Turf

(G1).

Louisiana Derby (G2) romper PYRO (Pulpit), exiting a runner-up effort

in the Indiana Derby (G2), sauntered in :53 1/5 as he eyes the Dirt Mile.

Grade 2 scorer GET FUNKY (Straight Man) traveled five panels in 1:01

3/5. The John Sadler charge, who was second as the defending champion in the

Morvich H. (G3), is set for the Turf Sprint.

Pine Tree Lane S. victress TIZZY'S TUNE (Tiznow), possible for the

Filly & Mare Sprint, posted the same time for Ron McAnally.

At Hollywood Park, multiple Grade 1 queen INTANGAROO (Orientate)

drilled five-eighths in :59 3/5 on the Cushion Track. Most recently successful

in the Ballerina S. (G1), the Gary Sherlock trainee is gearing up for the Filly

& Mare Sprint.

"Everything was good," Sherlock said. "We're right on schedule."

Pacific Classic hero GO BETWEEN (Point Given), a candidate for the

Classic, worked seven furlongs in 1:23 3/5 over the fast main track at Churchill

Downs.

At Fair Hill, multiple Grade 1 veteran and $4.2 million earner BETTER TALK

NOW (Talkin Man) exercised six panels in 1:14 on the Tapeta training track.

The Graham Motion charge, who captured the 2004 Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), will

try for another trophy at Santa Anita.

Flower Bowl Invitational (G1) winner DYNAFORCE (Dynaformer) worked toward the

Filly & Mare Turf with a four-furlong breeze in :50 over Belmont Park's fast

main track.

Suburban H. (G1) winner FROST GIANT (Giant's Causeway), who failed to finish

the Northern Dancer S. (Can-G1) most recently, worked a bullet five furlongs in

:59 2/5 over Aqueduct's fast main track. He is being pointed toward the

Marathon.

Multiple Grade 3-placed stakes winner SALUTE THE COUNT (Count the Time),

victorious in the Quick Call S. at Saratoga last time, traveled six furlongs in

1:13 1/5 over Aqueduct's firm turf in preparation for the Turf Sprint.
