Parading's first winner marches home

Last updated: 6/21/13 5:35 PM

Raise the Hoof saluted in Hollywood Park's

2ND

race on Friday, becoming the first winner sired by Grade 2 star Parading.

Trained by Jeff Bonde and ridden by Edwin Maldonado, the even-money favorite

sprinted to a clear lead from the start and never saw a challenge en route to a

2 1/2-length decision. The chestnut gelding sped 4 1/2 furlongs on the Cushion

Track in :52 3/5.

Fourth in a pair of maiden special weights, Raise the Hoof was dropped in for

a $50,000 tag here by owners Ganje, Lebherz, Lewis et al. He was promptly

claimed by the owner/trainer tandem of Patsy Jarvis and Marsha Schwizer.

Raise the Hoof was bred by John R. Penn in Pennsylvania and sold for $25,000

as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling. After RNA'ing for $30,000 at Barretts

last October, he brought $21,000 at the same venue in January. He is out of the

Danzig mare Time Buyer, making him a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Connections

(Unbridled).

Parading is a son of Pulpit and the Grade 3-placed On Parade (Storm Cat), herself a full

sister to champion juvenile filly Storm Flag Flying. Reaching his peak

as an older horse, the Phipps Stable homebred turned in a breakout performance

in the 2008 Volponi over Belmont Park's inner turf, only to be sidelined for

nearly a year.

Parading returned with a vengeance in 2009 for Shug McGaughey. Excelling on

turf and synthetic surfaces, he captured the Dixie (G2) at Pimlico and crushed

the Ben Ali (G3) by 7 1/2 lengths at Keeneland. The chestnut went on to finish

fourth in both the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar and the Goodwood (G1) at

Santa Anita. In his career finale, he finished second in the Fayette (G2) to

Blame, and signed off with a record of 21-7-5-2, $530,046.

Parading is a three-quarter brother to Grade 2-placed Protesting (A.P. Indy).

Their dam, On Parade, earned her black-type with a third in the 2001 Valley

Stream (G3) at Aqueduct.

On Parade is out of four-time Grade 1 star My Flag (Easy Goer), who produced

another four-time Grade 1 heroine in Storm Flag Flying. During her perfect

Eclipse Award-winning season in 2002, Storm Flag Flying scored in the Breeders'

Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), Matron (G1) and Frizette (G1). She later added the

2004 Personal Ensign H. (G1) and Shuvee H. (G2) at four.

My Flag is also responsible for stakes winner With Flying Colors and

stakes-placed sire Leading the Parade, both by A.P. Indy.

Parading's third dam is Hall of Famer Personal Ensign (Private Account), who

extended her unbeaten mark to 13-0 with a memorable rally in the 1988 Breeders'

Cup Distaff. Later honored as Broodmare of the Year, she is the dam of Grade

1-winning sires Miner's Mark and Traditionally, and multiple Grade 1-placed sire

Our Emblem, all by Mr. Prospector.

The 10-year-old Parading stands at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky, for

$3,500, stands and nurses.
