After succumbing to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby (G1), Journalism will not have to face that rival as he bids for compensation in Saturday's Preakness (G1) at Pimlico.

Sovereignty is freshening up for the Belmont (G1), and that leaves Journalism as an even stronger favorite over eight opponents in the Preakness. The Michael McCarthy runner has been pegged as the 8-5 morning-line choice as he seeks to emulate sire Curlin, the 2007 Preakness star.

Derby seventh Sandman and 16th American Promise will try to turn the tables, but newcomers make up the bulk of the field.

River Thames, runner-up to Sovereignty in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and most recently third in the Blue Grass (G1), will try to give Todd Pletcher his first Preakness trophy.

Bob Baffert bids for a record-extending ninth Preakness win with the twice-raced Goal Oriented. He figures to show speed on the rail, while Hot Springs S. hero Clever Again is also likely to dash early.

Lexington (G3) winner Gosger, Federico Tesio S. scorer Pay Billy, and UAE Derby (G2) runner-up Heart of Honor from the British yard of Jamie Osborne round out the cast.
