Pulpit colt brings top price at second Fasig session
A bay colt by Pulpit brought the top price of $760,000 from Desperado Stables
at the second session of the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearling Sale near
Lexington, Kentucky on Tuesday. Consigned by Nursery Place, agent, as Hip No.
353, the March 14 youngster is the first foal out of the unraced mare Mayhavebeentheone (Arch),
a half-sister to 2002 West Virginia Derby (G3) and Lone Star Derby (G3) winner
Wiseman's Ferry (Hennessy). The Kentucky-bred yearling also hails from the same
female family as 2002 Hopeful S. (G1) hero Sky Mesa (Pulpit).
Hip 380, a dark bay by Kafwain, recorded the second-highest price on the
day when acquired by Zayat Stables for
$485,000. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales
Agency, the March 17 colt is out of stakes winner Peyvon (Slewacide). The
Kentucky bred sold for $40,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale
last year.
A bay miss by Smart Strike led all fillies in the two-day sale when bringing $410,000
from Joseph Brocklebank, agent. Consigned by Mulholland Springs as Hip 339, the January 30
lass is out of the stakes-placed dam Lisieux (Steady Growth), a half-sister to
1982 Arlington Matron H. (G2) heroine Sweetest Chant (Mr. Leader), who is the
dam of Grade 2 winner and 1990 Acorn S. (G1) runner-up Danzig's Beauty (Danzig).
Distorted Humor, the second-leading ranked sire in 2005, is out of Danzig's Beauty.
Starlight Stables went to $375,000 to register the fourth-highest price of
the session for Hip 320, a bay filly by More Than Ready. Consigned by Eaton Sales,
agent, the April 10 dark bay is the second registered foal out of the unraced mare
Itsmylife (Storm Cat). The Kentucky-bred yearling's second dam is 1985 Breeders'
Cup Juvenile Fillies S. (G1) winner Twilight Ridge (Cox's Ridge), who produced
1995 Demoiselle S. (G2) victress La Rosa (Wild Again), the dam of Sabin H. (G3)
heroine Taittinger Rose (Menifee).
The highest price in the sale came in Monday's opening session when a
colt by Forestry, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, as Hip 217,
brought a bid of $1.2 million from John Ferguson.
For the session, 153 yearlings were acquired for $18,872,000, down 3.7
percent from last year's comparative session when 184 yearlings sold for
$19,603,000. Average price increased 15.8 percent, from $106,538 to $123,346,
while the median jumped 33.3 percent, from $75,000 to $100,000.
For the sale, 307 horses sold for $35,598,000. This was 4.1 percent lower
than 2005 when 368 head brought $37,106,000.
This year's sale experienced record
average and median prices. The average price increased by 15
percent, from $100,832 to $115,954, while median price increased 20 percent,
from $75,000 to $90,000.
