Pure Fun goes last-to-first in Indiana Oaks

Last updated: 10/5/13 7:14 PM

Pure Fun ran in last early during Saturday's Grade 2, $202,300

Indiana Oaks before putting in a four-wide move rounding the turn to run

down 2-5 favorite Fiftyshadesofhay and Oscar Party for a 1 3/4-length win. The

Pure Prize filly, who is campaigned by Susan McPeek's Magdalena Racing, ran 1

1/16 miles on Indiana Downs' sloppy, sealed track in 1:43 3/5.

Run Forestry Run was quickest from the gate, getting the quarter split in :23

3/5, but was quickly overtaken by Fiftyshadesofhay heading into the backstretch.

That favorite proceeded to set fractions of :46 4/5, 1:10 3/5 and 1:36 4/5 while

chased by Wild About Irene and Oscar Party. The former faded as Fiftyshadesofhay

and Oscar Party continued battling into the turn, but Pure Fun and jockey Victor

Lebron were just beginning their run.

Pure Fun swung four wide and ran down her two rivals to take over inside the

final eighth. She pulled clear under urging from Lebron to leave no doubt as to

who was best in this contest.

Oscar Party lost the war to the winner, but won the battle with

Fiftyshadesofhay, holding that one to third by three parts of a length. It was

another 5 1/2 lengths back to Plenty O'Toole, who in turn was followed by

Seaneen Girl, Wild About Irene and Run Forestry Run. Fully Living was scratched.

Pure Fun is no stranger to the winner's circle, improving her line to read

5-1-2 from 13 starts in the Indiana Oaks. Along the way the Ken McPeek-trained

sophomore has banked $482,652 in career earnings and scored in the Hollywood

Starlet as a juvenile. She placed in the Bourbonette Oaks to begin her 2013

season, but until Saturday hadn't been seen in competition since running a

subpar sixth in the May 3 Kentucky Oaks.

Bred in Kentucky by Royal Oak Farm Inc., Pure Fun was a $5,000 Keeneland

November RNA as a weanling before selling for $22,000 as a Keeneland September

yearling. She is out of the winning Key to the Mint mare Chelsea Green, who also

produced dual stakes-placed filly Lady Cheyne.

Chelsea Green is herself out of stakes-placed winner Chelseanna, making her a

half-sister to Gorky and Golden Spirit, both stakes-placed, as well as

black-type winner Lady Tap, who is the dam of Grade 3-placed stakes victress

Lady's Laughter. Chelsea Green is also a half-sister to the dam of Grade 1

heroine Chelsey Flower.

Others of note in this female family include champion turf horse Buck's Boy

as well as dual Canadian champions Scotzanna and Par Excellance.
