Reneesgotzip wires Rancho Bernardo in track-record time
Lanni Family Trust's Reneesgotzip was much the best as she wired Sunday's
Grade 3, $150,000
Rancho Bernardo Handicap and crossed the wire in a track-record 1:14.48 for the 6
1/2-furlong test. She beat the former mark, set by Carlsbad in 2009, by .45.
"You never want to be overconfident," trainer Peter Miller said of
the 1-5 favorite. "But if you
like the way they're doing and you know they love this racetrack… And it was a
good setup. There didn't look like there was any speed that could run with her.
What can I say? She's just the fastest thing on four legs. The track record did
surprise me a little bit, yeah."
The four-year-old filly had good early speed as she set quick fractions of
:22 2/5 and :44 2/5. Reneesgotzip was no match for her competition as she had a comfortable 2
1/2-length lead at the half-mile mark. She remained clear on the far turn as she
turned it up a notch in the stretch to draw away and post a 4 1/4-length victory
for her fourth stakes score.
"She left there good, but then she seemed to lose focus for a little bit,"
jockey Garrett Gomez said. "She was changing leads back and forth and I just
tapped her on the shoulder to try to get her back on track. And then it was 'oh,
oh.' She set sail and she was almost gone. She's very, very fast and that's her
main weapon. But she's got another dimension to her.
"She doesn't have to be on the lead, but when she's running like she did
today you really don't want to do anything else with her. She's a nice one, no
doubt. And you love to ride horses like her."
Defending champion Winding Way got up for second, while Sweet Marini took third by a nose over
Sugarinthemorning and Curvy Cat brought up the rear.
Reneesgotzip, now perfect in three starts at Del Mar, paid her supporters $2.60 to
win.
The daughter of City Zip broke her maiden at Hollywood Park in
December of 2011 in her only start as a two-year-old. She opened her
three-year-old campaign at Santa Anita against Grade 2 company,
romping by 7 3/4 lengths in the 2012 Santa Ynez Stakes.
Reneesgotzip suffered her first loss when trying two turns in the Las
Virgenes, but still finished a clear second. After being beaten only a nose in
the Santa Anita Oaks, she reverted to her true home in sprints. She wired an
allowance race at Hollywood Park next time out, but would not be seen again for
four months, when she took the C.E.R.F.
Stakes at Del Mar gate-to-wire on September 5. The chestnut finished seventh
against males in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship the following month and
took third in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in her only start on the grass to
date. She was victorious in the Skillful Joy Stakes at Hollywood Park on
December 1 and closed out the year with a runner-up finish in the La Brea at
Santa Anita.
Reneesgotzip captured an allowance over this track last month by 5 1/4
lengths in her first start of 2013. With Sunday's score, she banked $90,000 to
boost her bankroll to $655,460 from a career line of 12-7-3-1.
Bred in Kentucky by John Liviakis, Reneesgotzip is the first stakes scorer
out of the winning Distorted Humor mare No Dress Code. With her fourth dam being
1977 champion handicap mare Cascapedia, she hails from the family of Grade/Group
1 heroines Acey Deucey and Republic Lass and multiple Grade 2-winning highweight Big Jag.
Reneesgotzip has passed through the sales ring twice, bringing $3,500 as a
Fasig-Tipton October yearling and $45,000 from her current connections as an OBS
April two-year-old.
