Royal Posse splashes to popular win in Claiming Crown Jewel

Last updated: 12/5/15 7:43 PM

Royal Posse (Posse) led a one-two finish by Rudy Rodriguez-trained horses by

defeating Mr Palmer (Pulpit) in Saturday's $200,000 Claiming Crown Jewel,

the richest of Claiming Crown starter events on opening day of Gulfstream Park's

Championship Meet.

Scoring over a sloppy track and paying $5.60 as the favorite, Royal Posse was

ridden by Javier Castellano, who won four of the nine Claiming Crown events.

In other stakes action Saturday,

Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) could be trainer John Servis' next big horse after

dominating her rivals by more than 16 lengths in the $100,000 Gin Talking at

Laurel.

The juvenile filly has won both of her starts by open lengths, reminiscent of

the Servis-trained Smarty Jones, who dominated in a pair of juvenile outings and

went on to be named champion three-year-old after winning the first two legs of

the Triple Crown in 2004.

Also on Saturday,

Room for Me (Harlington) and Lady Sabelia (Majestic Warrior) were impressive,

odds-on winners of the $100,000 Garland of Roses at Aqueduct and $100,000 Willa

On the Move at Laurel, respectively. Both were six-furlong features for

fillies and mares.
