Sailor weathers the storm at Colonial

Last updated: 6/21/08 6:59 PM

Team Valor's SAILOR'S CAP (Distant View) moved to the fore

approaching the final turn and exploded in the lane to post a comprehensive, 6

3/4-length score over the soft turf course in the $600,000

Colonial Turf Cup S.

(G3) at Colonial Downs on Saturday. Trained by Jimmy Toner, the talented sophomore rated in

midpack before putting in his lethal run beneath Alan Garcia, finishing off 1

3/16 miles in 2:04 2/5. The lukewarm 7-2 choice paid $9.20, $5.20 and $3.80

while keying the $47.80 exacta, $1,141.60 trifecta and $11,688.40 superfecta

(9-6-3-2) in what turned out to be the final race of the day after the finale

was canceled due to extreme weather conditions.

Kentucky Bear (Mr. Greeley), the 4-1 third choice, broke best and led the

field through splits of :25 1/5, :50 4/5 and 1:18 1/5 for the opening six

panels prior to throwing in the towel. Nistle's Crunch (Van Nistelrooy) tracked

the pacesetter early and was in position to take command turning for home, but

was quickly passed by Sailor's Cap and had no chance with that one. Nistle's

Crunch did stay on to retain the place spot while a length clear of his

competitors. The 6-1 fifth choice paid $6.60 and $4.80. Your Round (Distorted

Humor), the 56-1 longshot, was last for the opening three-quarters but rallied

well to garner show honors, paying $14.40 in the process. Court Vision (Gulch)

capped the super at 7-1 a head back and finished in front of Adriano (A.P.

Indy), Baltimore Bob (Malibu Moon), El Sultry Sun (Eltish), Sporting Art (Doneraile

Court), Boss Lafitte (Dynaformer) and Kentucky Bear.

Sailor's Cap earned his first stakes win in this one, improving his lifetime

line to 6-3-1-0, $463,495. The bay colt ran fourth in his debut and followed

that up with a dominant maiden win at Belmont while concluding his juvenile campaign.

Unplaced in his sophomore bow, Sailor's Cap crushed allowance foes at

Keeneland and finished a game second most recently in the Crown Royal American Turf S. (G3)

at Churchill Downs.

Bred in Kentucky by Wave On LLC, the winner is out of Wave On (Caveat) and has an unraced two-year-old

half-sister named Playa Bonita (Royal Academy), an unnamed yearling half-brother by Rock Hard Ten

and an unnamed 2008 half-brother by Stormy Atlantic. Sailor's Cap comes

from the same line as Grade 3 victress Hot Option (Explodent), who is the dam of

1997 Ballston Spa H. (G3) winner Valor Lady (Sir Ivor).
