San Fernando attracts a dozen

Last updated: 1/14/09 6:00 PM

MUNY (Najran) and MADEO (Mizzen Mast), the respective one-two finishers in

the Oak Tree Derby (G2), will both make the move from turf to synthetic in

Saturday's $150,000

San

Fernando S. (G2). One of three graded events at Santa Anita, the 1 1/16-mile

test features a well-matched field of 12 older horses, including graded

winners EL GATO MALO (El Corredor), TRES BORRACHOS (Ecton Park) and WISHFUL

TOMCAT (Tactical Cat).

Muny and Madeo both have experience on synthetic tracks, with Muny breaking

his maiden at Del Mar and Madeo garnering a pair of victories on the Cushion

Track at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, but both are more accomplished on turf.

Muny edged his rival by a neck two starts back in the October 25 Oak Tree Derby

and exits a front-running fifth, beaten 1 3/4 lengths, in the Hollywood Derby

(G1). Del Mar Derby (G2) hero Madeo failed to fire last time in the Hollywood

Derby, checking in eighth.

Grade 1 runner-up SLEW'S TIZNOW (Tiznow) will enter the San Fernando off an

encouraging 3 3/4-length score in the off-the-turf War Chant S., and CHEROKEE

ARTIST (Cherokee Run), a commanding three-length scorer on the Breeders' Cup

Friday undercard, will also enter in good form. Wishful Tomcat, who was sold

following his wire-to-wire win in the November 22 Discovery H. (G3) at Aqueduct,

will make his first start in Southern California under the direction of new

trainer Bobby Frankel.
