Sayaad returns a winner in Forbidden Apple; Joy upsets

Perfect Sting

Belmont Park's July 4 stakes double-header was affected by rain that rendered

the Widener turf yielding and prompted a number of scratches, chief among them

the 7-5 Za Approval, who withdrew from the $150,000

Forbidden Apple. In his absence, Shadwell Stable's Sayaad returned from an

eight-month layoff to go wire to wire, extending his winning streak to three.

Sayaad showed no rust when breaking alertly to grab command. Under Jose

Ortiz, the Kiaran McLaughlin trainee established a comfortable lead through

splits of :22 4/5, :48 and 1:12 3/5. Even-money favorite Kharafa loomed a danger

down the stretch, but Sayaad was full of resolve. Drifting out and perhaps

growing weary after his exertions in the conditions, Sayaad bravely repelled

Kharafa and inched away again to a 2 1/4-length decision. The 3-1 third choice

covered the soggy mile in 1:38 1/5 and paid $8.60.

"He was going along nice and easy," Ortiz recapped. "I felt the other horse

coming, but when I asked my horse, he responded. He's a nice horse."

"It was a great performance," McLaughlin said. "We were a little surprised

off of an (eight) month layoff over a soft turf course. We thought he might get

a little tired, but he was very game. Jose rode him well and he's a really neat

horse. We're so thankful that (owner) Sheikh Hamdan was patient with him. We

haven't thought too far ahead with him, but obviously he's a very nice stakes

horse."

Kharafa crossed the wire 6 1/2 lengths ahead of third-placer Bio Pro, and

Hamp and General Logan rounded out the strung-out field. Joining Za Approval on

the scratch list were Plainview, who was entered in Wednesday's 8TH race, and

the main-track-only Dawly, who is in Sunday's Salvator Mile at Monmouth.

Sayaad's resume now reads 11-5-2-0, $315,037. Fifth in his stakes debut in

the Hill Prince over this course and distance last summer, the Street Sense colt

later posted a front-running, 4 1/2-length victory in the Dance of Life at

Saratoga. He made it two straight with a gutsy score in a Belmont turf allowance

last October, and displayed a similarly admirable attitude in his comeback here.

Bred by Vision Sales 2009, Sayaad was a $450,000 Keeneland November weanling

purchase. The four-year-old bay is out of the winning Time for a Change mare

Time for a Crown, making him a half-brother to Grade 1-placed Coronet of a Baron

and stakes diva Banga Ridge, who is herself the dam of current Grade 3-placed

sophomore Unspurned. This is the family of Grade 1 queen A Z Warrior; Grade 3

victor E Z Warrior; multiple stakes winner and Grade 3-placed J Z Warrior; and

the latest addition, Jojo Warrior, who just earned her Grade 2 laurel in the

Summertime Oaks.

Joy went last to first in an eventful running of the Perfect Sting

(NYRA/Adam Coglianese Photography)

The $95,000

Perfect Sting for distaffers lost half of its entrants, but kept its two

principals in 4-5 favorite Waterway Run and 2-1 second choice Orion Moon. But as

it turned out, neither could cope with the conditions as well as 11-1 outsider

Joy from the Graham Motion barn. Irad Ortiz Jr. engineered the winning trip,

making it a stakes double for the jockey brothers.

Only five entered the gate after the scratches of Baffle Me, Alaura Michele,

Angel's South and Embarr, as well as the main-track-only Belle Gallantey. Then

the actual field was reduced further when Lady Ten reared up at the start,

dislodging John Velazquez in the gate, and took off riderless to lead the way.

Velazquez was unhurt in the incident.

That left just four to take part in the official proceedings. Orion Moon

carved out tepid fractions of :24 2/5 and :49 3/5, with Mah Jong Maddnes in

close attendance. Waterway Run stalked along the inside, while Joy was content

to anchor the quartet early. The field caught up to the slackening Lady Ten on

the far turn, but crisis was averted when the riderless mare held to her inside

path, and the others safely steered around her.

Mah Jong Maddnes accosted Orion Moon, headed her at the six-furlong mark in

1:15 3/5, and put her away in earnest down the lane. In deep stretch, however,

Joy began to gain momentum and rolled past to win going away by 3 1/2 lengths in

a final time of 1:40.

"I had a pretty good trip," Irad Ortiz Jr. said. "There was a loose horse on

the track; when you have a loose horse in front of you, you don't know what he's

going to do. She was very comfortable, we saved some ground, and then we had to

move a little earlier because of the loose horse. She switched leads in the

stretch and took off."

Waterway Run closed for third, just a neck behind Mah Jong Maddnes, and Orion

Moon tired to last. The stewards held an inquiry into Lady Ten's mishap at the

start but no action was required.

A Maryland homebred campaigned by Dark Hollow Farm, Joy returned a $24 win

mutuel. The chestnut daughter of Pure Prize was offered as a yearling at the

2011 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic October, but RNA'd for $35,000. She has now earned

$180,810 from her 15-4-1-1, reflecting a prior stakes victory in last summer's

Christiana at Delaware and a third in Saratoga's Auntie Mame.

Joy is the first registered foal from the winning Safe Journey, a Flatter

mare who descends from the family of Hall of Famer Safely Kept.
