Scorpion represented by first winner

Grade 1 winner SCORPION (Seattle Slew) had his first winner as a sire on

Thursday when his two-year-old daughter Duchess of Stanco captured the 3RD race

at Aqueduct beneath Jose Santos. The Kiaran McLaughlin-trained dark bay, who was making her career debut in the seven-furlong maiden special

weight, ran in midpack while saving ground before coming out and

rallying three wide to score by three parts of a length. Duchess of Stanco

stopped the clock in 1:26 3/5 as the 15-1 fifth choice in the eight-horse field.

Scorpion also captured his initial start as a juvenile, taking a maiden at

Belmont Park on May 11, 2000. Although he didn't taste victory again that

season, he placed in the Futurity S. (G1), Saratoga Special S. (G2), Sanford S.

(G2) and Tremont S. (G3). As a sophomore, the D. Wayne Lukas trainee scored in a Gulfstream

Park allowance in his first start of 2001 and would later go on to take the Jim Dandy

S. (G1) at Saratoga, notably defeating Congaree and A.P Valentine.

Scorpion was retired after failing to finish in the 2002 Strub S. (G2), running up a

19-4-1-3 line and $555,749 in earnings over three seasons of racing.

The eight-year-old stallion stood the 2006 season for a private fee at Pinecrest

Stables near Ocala, Florida.
