Lael Stables' Senada scored her first stakes victory in the $125,000

Dowager Stakes on Sunday at Keeneland.

"Having watched the filly run a couple times at Saratoga, it seemed

like she had one big kick at the end," jockey Edgar Prado said.

"(Trainer) Barclay (Tagg) told me to bide my time, save ground and come

with a run at the end.

"I was very happy when I saw that she is out of Owsley," he added. "I

won with Owsley here before. She handled the course beautifully and came

home very strong."

Senada ran 1 1/2 miles on the firm turf in 2:31, beating rival

Upperline by three-quarters of a length.

"We just can't find mile-and-a-half races for her very often," Tagg

said. "We always thought she'd like it that way. Edgar rode her to

perfection and it worked out. We've felt real good about her the last

couple of weeks. She seemed to thrive here and she got a lot of nice

green grass here. She ran well."

Sent off as the 16-1 sixth pick in the 11-filly field, Senada returned

$35.40, $13 and $5.20 to her backers. Upperline was the fourth pick at 7-1 and

easily held 6-5 favorite Cheetah by three lengths on the wire.

"We were pleased with her effort," trainer Mike Stidham said of Upperline.

"We were questioning whether she would get the mile and a half, and she

obviously did. I though James (Graham) rode a fantastic race. Other than not

winning, I'm very pleased."

Cheetah tracked the pacesetter throughout, but couldn't withstand the rally

of the late-running winner.

"She was a little closer than I anticipated," jockey Garrett Gomez said of

Cheetah. "She left (the gate) really good and I was very surprised that I was in

front about the first 80 yards. I wanted to get some cover, and I really didn't

want to be as close as I was. Nothing ever went forward and I found myself in a

good tracking position. I just kind of ended up having to make the front too

soon with her.

"She's a European filly and she doesn't stay on real well without having a

nice little target out there. She showed she can be a little more useful, that's

a plus."

Senada gave Prado his third win on the day while boosting her earnings to

$134,876. The four-year-old daughter of Pulpit improved her lifetime record to

15-2-4-6.
