Shadwell Turf Mile

Last updated: 10/7/06 8:30 PM

Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Salman Faisal's AUSSIE RULES (Danehill)

surged through an opening between horses under Garrett Gomez late and proved

much the best in taking the lucrative $600,000

Shadwell Turf Mile S. (G1) over

the Keeneland turf course on Saturday. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, the classy

pond jumper rated in midpack early and awaited room in the stretch, finally

getting clear and spurting home in impressive fashion. The lone sophomore in the

field paid $11.80, $6.60 and $5.60 at 9-2.

"I just had to find a place for him to go when when we turned for home,"

Gomez said. "He accelerated and ran right by them. He's a really nice horse."

Old Dodge (Brz) (Dodge) went to the front and set

tepid splits of :23 4/5 and :47 4/5 for the opening half-mile, with Remarkable

News (Ven) (Chayim) rating in the second spot and Aussie Rules rating well off

the pace near the inside. As the field straightened for home, Old Dodge proved

to be stubborn and kept on, getting six panels in 1:11 2/5, but Aussie Rules

found room and it was over in a matter of a couple late jumps. The winner

completed one firm mile in a sharp 1:34 1/5 while 1 3/4 lengths clear of the

place.

Remarkable News got up by a nose to earn the place spot at 5-1, paying $7.60

and $8 while completing the $99.60 exacta. Old Dodge was a head clear in third,

worth $15.60 at 50-1. The winning trifecta paid $2,159.80. The 5-2 Miesque's Approval (Miesque's

Son) and Cosmonaut (Lemon Drop Kid), at 8-1 odds, finished in a

dead-heat for fourth, making the superfectas worth $6,620.60 (3-4-7-6) and

$4,821.60 (3-4-7-2). Three Valleys (Diesis [GB]) was next and followed by Silent

Name (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), Hendrix (Sultry Song) and British Blue (Storm Cat).

Aussie Rules, winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains S. (French Two

Thousand Guineas) (Fr-G1) earlier

this season, upped his lifetime mark to 11-4-1-0 with earnings of $875,309. The

sophomore captured the 2005 Somerville Tattersall S. (Eng-G3) and placed in the Round Tower

S. (Ire-G3).

The gray was bred in the Bluegrass State by Belgrave Bloodstock Ltd. and was

produced from the classy multiple Group 2 heroine Last Second (Ire) (Alzao),

winner of the Nassau S. (Eng-G2), Sun Chariot S. (Eng-G2) and C. L. Weld Park

S. (Ire-G3), while second in the Coronation S. (Eng-G1). Aussie Rules has a trio

of unraced half-siblings, a two-year-old colt named Bold Glance (Kingmambo), a

two-year-old filly named Limelight (Dalakhani) as well as an unnamed 2006 colt

by Kingmambo.
