Shared Belief dies from colic; Claiming Crown opens

Gulfstream's Championship meet

Champion Shared Belief (Candy Ride) died on Thursday due to colic, one day

after galloping at trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's Golden Gate Fields base.

Co-owner Jim Rome posted on Facebook: "Thoroughbred racing is a sport filled

with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Some of the most thrilling and

surreal moments of our entire lives have occurred in this sport. Unfortunately,

today we have suffered our most devastating. We have lost Shared Belief."

In other news on Thursday, Dick Powell discussed a budding rivalry between

Effinex (Mineshaft) and Tonalist (Tapit) in

Handicapping Insights and John Mucciolo talked about Tonalist's victory in

the Cigar Mile (G1) in his

Aqueduct Notebook.

This weekend will see the

Claiming Crown kick off Gulfstream Park's Championship meet on Saturday and

Grade 1 winner

Princess Violet (Officer) returns in the Garland of Roses S. at Aqueduct.

The New York Racing Association released its 2016 racing calendar and
