Silver Hawk dead at 29

Outstanding stallion SILVER HAWK (Roberto), whose progeny captured

major races all over the globe, has been euthanized. The 29-year-old was buried

at Airdrie Stud near Midway, Kentucky, where he spent his entire stud career.

Silver Hawk had been pensioned prior to the 2004 breeding season.

Top performers by Silver Hawk include multiple Grade 1 heroine Nashoba's Key,

who was also recently euthanized after a freak accident at Hollywood Park;

Japanese champion Grass Wonder; Benny the Dip, winner of the 1997 Epsom Derby

(Eng-G1); multiple highweights Mutafaweq, hero of the 1999 St Leger (Eng-G1),

and Mubtaker, a three-time victor of the Geoffrey Freer S. (Eng-G2); and

multiple Grade 1 winners Memories of Silver, Wonder Again and Hawkster, among a

host of others.

Silver Hawk's daughters are also making their mark, producing

English co-highweight Playful Act (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who commanded a

world-record $10.5 million as a broodmare last year; such Grade 1 stars as

Castledale (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), Asi Siempre (El Prado [Ire]), Ticker Tape

(GB) (Royal Applause [GB]) and Pink Cameo (French Deputy); and multiple Grade

2-winning millionaire Badge of Silver (Silver Deputy), who is now an Airdrie

stallion.

The Kentucky-bred Silver Hawk was campaigned in Europe, compiling a

mark of 8-3-4-0. The bay captured the Solario S. as a juvenile in 1981 and the

Craven S. (Eng-G3) the following year, when he also placed in the Derby S.

(Eng-G1) and Irish Derby (Ire-G1).

Silver Hawk was produced by multiple French

stakes victress Gris Vitesse (*Amerigo).
