Silverfoot shines in Stars and Stripes

Last updated: 7/4/08 7:36 PM

Chrysalis Stables' SILVERFOOT (With Approval) raced in last during the early

part of Friday's $175,000

Stars and Stripes Turf H. (G3), surged to the lead in Arlington Park's upper

stretch and was all out to post a two-length win on the line under jockey Rene

Douglas. The 5-1 third pick in the nine-horse field, the Dallas Stewart-trained

veteran rewarded his faithful backers with payouts of $12, $6.80 and $4.60 while

earning his first win in more than two years.

"I took my time with him," Douglas explained. "At the three-eighths pole, he

knew he was the man. I said to myself, 'It's a little early to pull the trigger

and I know he's eight-years old but if you want to go, then go.' He was a

champion today."

The race was a blowout in the beginning, with former claimer Rumor Has It

(Awesome Again) showing to the front and pulling off to lead by as much as 12

lengths while setting splits of :25 1/5, :49 2/5, 1:14 1/5 and 1:39 2/5. The

field quickly overwhelmed the speedy gelding, who had just missed by a

half-length when trying those same tactics in the Rossi Gold S. last out, with

Silverfoot going best of all. The flashy gray gelding powered his way home to

finish the 1 1/2-mile, good-turf test in 2:30 2/5.

Telling (A.P. Indy) managed to be best of the rest on the line, giving back

$11.60 and $7.40 at 14-1 after racing in midpack for much of the race. Canela (El

Corredor) finished another length back in third, returning $12.80 at 35-1, and

it was 1 1/4 lengths back to 2-1 second pick Cloudy's Knight (Lord Avie) in

fourth. The exotics paid out $131.40 (exacta), $3,258 (trifecta) and $10,125.40

(9-6-5-2 superfecta).

Borobudur (Kingmambo) just missed fourth by a head and was followed under the

line by Major Rhythm (Rhythm), Rumor Has It, A. P. Xcellent (A.P. Indy) and 3-2

favorite Lattice (Arch).

Silverfoot adds this one to a line that already includes three consecutive

wins in the Louisville H. (G3) (2004-2006) and a victory in the 2005 Kentucky

Cup Turf H. (G3). The hard-knocking eight-year-old also owns placings in the

2005 United Nations S. (G1) and 2006 Elkhorn S. (G3), and now boasts a

31-10-1-2, $846,015, career mark after skipping 2007 and reappearing this season

on January 12.

Bred by Stephanie S. Clark in Kentucky, Silverfoot is the first

registered foal out of stakes winner Northern Silver (Silver Ghost) and has a

pair of half-sisters in a yearling named Silver La Belle (Langfuhr) and a 2008

Cozzene filly named Northern Cozze.
