Six set for Vanity

Last updated: 6/12/13 7:11 PM

Open Water and Lady of Fifty, the respective one-two finishers in the May 18

Marjorie L. Everett Handicap, and Grade 2 winner More Chocolate highlight a

field of six in Saturday's Grade 1, $250,000

Vanity

Handicap at Hollywood Park.

The 72nd renewal of the 1 1/8-mile Vanity will be preceded by a pair of

stakes for two-year-olds -- the $100,000

Willard L.

Proctor Memorial and the $100,000

Cinderella

for fillies. Both are at 5 1/2 furlongs over Cushion Track.

In celebration of Hollywood Park's diamond anniversary, the Inglewood,

Californian, track will offer special 75 cent pricing Saturday. General

admission, programs, hot dogs and sodas will be available for 75 cents

throughout the day. Beer will be offered at the reduced price for 75 minutes --

1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. (PDT).

Open Water exits a 9-1 upset over odds-on favorite Lady of Fifty and the Eric

Guillot-trained four-year-old will be looking to become the first female to

sweep both the Everett (which was called the Milady prior to 2012) and Vanity

since Zenyatta in 2009. Joe Talamo retains the mount on the late runner.

Lady of Fifty concluded 2012 on a two-race win skein, including the Grade 2

Bayakoa on the Cushion Track, but has dropped all three outings this year. The

Jerry Hollendorfer charge finished fourth in the La Canada and third in the

Santa Maria before coming up a little short last time. Rafael Bejarano has the

call.

Hollendorfer, who won the 2011 Vanity with Blind Luck, also will be

represented by Esentepe, who exits a convincing optional claiming win in her

first start over Cushion Track on May 9.

Trainer John Sadler, who won the 2004 Vanity with Victory Encounter, will

send out More Chocolate, winner of the Grade 2 La Canada at Santa Anita earlier

this season. Runner-up in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita two back, the

four-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon exits a fifth against better in the Grade

2 La Troienne at Churchill Downs.

Multiple stakes heroine and Grade 1 runner-up Byrama also returns to the

Cushion Track following a sixth in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill

Downs. Recent optional claiming victress Royal Tiger completes the field.

Trainer Peter Miller, who has won three of the last six runnings of the

Willard L. Proctor Memorial, will seek another victory Saturday with recent

debut winner Solid Wager. Miller's wins came with Thoroughly (2007),

Backbackbackgone (2008) and Majestic City (2011). A son of Birdonthewire, Solid

Wager recorded a 2 1/4-length maiden tally on  June 7.

After winning the Cinderella last year with Miss Empire, Miller will send out

a pair -- On the Backstreets and Sensational Nikki -- in search of a repeat.

On the Backstreets exits a 2 1/4-length debut win on May 23 and Sensational

Nikki also won first time out, prevailing by three-quarters of a length as the

6-5 favorite on June 2.
