Slew's Tizzy pulls off Lexington shocker
Joseph Lacombe Stable Inc.'s homebred SLEW'S TIZZY (Tiznow) took the lead soon after the start and pulled away to a convincing 3 1/2-length tally in the $325,000 Lexington S. (G2) before the largest crowd in Keeneland's history on Saturday. Sent right to the front beneath Robby Albarado, the three-year-old colt established splits of :23 4/5, :48, 1:12 2/5 and 1:36 4/5 for the opening mile, before completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 1/5 for trainer Greg Fox. The sophomore colt was sent off as the 40-1 longest shot and rewarded backers with payoffs of $83, $29.60 and $13.60 in front of 33,821 fans.
"He had his ears up," Albarado explained. "He was content being up there on the lead. I just tried to keep him as quiet as possible. Ideally, we didn't want to be on the lead, but we found ourselves there. He exploded when I called on him."
"I was concerned when (Slew's Tizzy) was on the lead but then I started to get excited when I saw Robby sitting there on a tremendous amount of horse," Fox admitted. "This horse has never put it all together until this race. I never knew until the very end that he would win." Starbase (Tale of the Cat) tracked on the outside early and closed well to earn the place spot, good for $29.60 and $13 at 36-1. The exacta paid $1,002.20, and the trifecta returned $14,726.20 with Forty Grams (Distorted Humor) another three parts of a length back in third. Show paid $5 for the 5-1 shot. Trust Your Luck (Mr. Greeley) capped the whopping $97,128 superfecta (6-10-1-7) at 8-1, and was trailed by Joe Got Even (Stephen Got Even), Sacrifice Bunt (Storm Cat), 3-1 second choice Soaring By (Deputy Minister), Boogiemanball (Family Calling) and 9-5 favorite Belgravia (Mr. Greeley). Moyer's Pond (Monarchos) was withdrawn.

Julien Leparoux, jockey of beaten favorite Belgravia, indicated that the
chestnut colt bled.
"I had a good trip, but when I asked him at the three-eighths, he had
nothing, no juice or anything," Leparoux said. "He stopped right there and I
just rode him easy, no whip or anything. When he came back, we saw that he bled.
I think that's the excuse for today."
Slew's Tizzy upped his mark to 6-2-0-0 with earnings that ballooned to
$220,252. The dark bay colt clipped heels and unseated his jockey two prior in the Risen Star S.
(G3) and finished seventh in the Louisiana Derby (G2) most recently.
The Kentucky-bred is out of the winning Hepatica (Slewpy) and has an unraced
two-year-old full brother named Slew's Tiznow, as well as an unnamed yearling
half-sister by Hennessy.
