Smoke'n Coal tops OBS sale

SMOKE'N COAL (Smoke Glacken) sold for the top price of $550,000 to Darley at

Tuesday's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Selected Two-Year-Olds in Training

Sale. The gray juvenile was consigned by Peacock Ridge (Becky Boyd), agent.

Cataloged as Hip No. 42, Smoke'n Coal breezed a quarter-mile in :22 1/5 at the under tack show on

February 4. The Florida-bred is a full brother to multiple Grade 2 winner Smok'n

Frolic, who earned $1,534,720 from a record of 33-9-8-2, and a half-brother to

stakes winner Cherokee Chase (Rizzi).

Smoke'n Coal is out of multiple stakes-placed Cherokyfrolicflash (Green Dancer), a

full sister to Grade 3 winner Fabulous Frolic, and a half-sister to Grade 3

winner Lindsay Frolic (Mt. Livermore), the dam of 2005 Hawthorne Gold Cup H.

(G2) winner Super Frolic (Pine Bluff) and multiple stakes winner Stormy Frolic

(Summer Squall). The juvenile's second dam, Cherokee Frolic (Cherokee Fellow), won the 1981

Test S. (G2) and nine other black-type events.

A colt by Stormy Atlantic, Hip 60, fetched the second-highest price, bringing

$500,000 from Lael Stable. Consigned by Nick de Meric, agent, the youngster is out of the

winning Distinctive Pro mare Elise', a half-sister to three stakes winners,

including 1987 Monmouth Oaks (G1) heroine Without Feathers (Brave Shot [GB]).

The dark bay worked one furlong in :10 1/5 at the under tack show on February

4. He previously sold for $60,000 at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton August New York-bred

Yearling Sale.

The sales company reported 96 juveniles sold for $12,831,000, a decline of 1 percent compared to a year ago when 93 youngsters sold for $12,967,000. The

average price dropped 4.1 percent, from $139,430 to $133,656.
