Smooth Roller earns first stakes win in Awesome Again
Lucky Charm Stable's Smooth Roller (Hard Spun) scored his first stakes victory
on Saturday when running away with the $300,750 Awesome Again S. (G1) at Santa
Jockey Tyler Baze piloted the Victor Garcia pupil as he tracked pacesetter
and 6-5 favorite Bayern on the backstretch. Smooth Roller ranged up to run in
tandem with the leader rounding the turn and easily pulled off in the stretch to
complete 1 1/8 miles on the fast main track in 1:48.08.
Though he only boasts four lifetime starts, Smooth Roller earned a guaranteed
spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) starting gate thanks to the
Awesome Again being part of the "Win & You're In" Challenge series.
