Soi Phet bests own track record in Los Alamitos Mile romp

Last updated: 9/6/14 9:42 PM

Soi Phet proved best by a wide margin in Saturday's $200,750

Los Alamitos Mile with jockey Kent Desormeaux aboard. The Leonard

Powell-trained gelding tracked pacesetting even-money favorite Masochistic into

the stretch before easily taking over and drawing off for a 7 1/4-length

victory.

The six-year-old son of Tizbud was the 9-2 third choice in the eight-horse

field and paid $11.60 for completing eight furlongs on the fast dirt in a record

time of 1:33.95, besting his own track record of 1:34.50 when taking the July 3

Bertrando.

Masochistic held second by a half-length after leading through early splits

of :22 3/5, :45 3/5 and 1:09. Tonito M. just got his head down on the line to

take third from Sky Kingdom, while Wrightwood, Rock Me Baby, Clubhouse Ride and

Forward March rounded out the order of finish. Kate's Event was withdrawn.

Campaigned by Gerald & Sandra Benowitz, Mathilde Powell and Paul A. Viskovich,

Soi Phet now boasts a 29-8-2-2, $472,686, career record for adding a second

stakes win to his resume. The first came via the Bertrando during

Los

Alamitos' summer stand, and he also shows a third-placing in last year's

Awesome Again at Santa Anita.

Bred in California by ARCHA Racing Inc., Soi Phet is out of the Siberian

Summer mare Summer Jersey and comes from the same female line as Sweet Alliance,

the 1977 Kentucky Oaks queen and dam of English/Irish champion Shareef Dancer.

Two races earlier, James W. and Tammy M. McKenney's homebred Uzziel wired the

$75,500

Beverly J. Lewis Stakes by three parts of a length with Tyler Baze holding

the reins. The Mike Puype pupil ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14 3/5 to return $10.20

as the 4-1 fourth choice.

Uzziel set splits of :21 4/5, :44 and 1:08 en route to earning her second

stakes credit. The Harlington filly opened her sophomore season with a

well-beaten last-of-four in the Santa Ynez on January 4 but would go on to take

the April 11 Santa Paula. Entering the Lewis off a nice third in

Del Mar's Daisycutter

Handicap, she improved her resume to read 8-4-0-2, $152,638.
